2 General
CIB is a Cabling Interface Box for mounting on top of an electronic unit, MCM700,
CCM10 or SSM701.

Picture 1, CIB on top of a CCM10

The CIB allows “traditional” cabling on the engine. The cables are connected to the
terminals in the CIB through cable glands. Outer shields are connected in the cable
glands, (EMC type), to the box and the inner shields are continued inside the box.

Material numbers for the CIB and the CIB PCBs is found in table 1.

6 CIB mechanics
This chapter contains information about the CIB mechanics.

6.1 Cable glands and locking plugs

Cable glands used with CIB are EMC cable glands with metric threads. In table 15 the
cable diameters and Wärtsilä Mat.No. for the cable glands used can be obtained.

Table 15; Cable glands used with CIB

Size Max. qty / box Cable diam. [mm] Wärtsilä Mat.No.

M20 2 11.0-14.0 0050G377106
M25 2 16.0-19.0 0050G377108

When a hole is left without cable gland it has to be plugged with a locking plug in order
to achieve tightness and fulfilling EMC requirements.

6.2 EMC and grounding

When correctly installed the CIB provides an improvement in the EMC performance of
the engine control systems. The CIB provides 360° chassis grounding of the shields for
all cables entering the module. Since the engine block is a good low-impedance ground
plane, with practically no voltage drops between different points, the general shielding
principle is to connect the cable shields in both ends of a cable (multipoint). If a cable
has a double screen such as the 90V power cable or the multi-bus cable, the inner shield
is to be connected in one end of the system (preferably in the P-Mod) and linked in
every module throughout the system.

Picture 2; Mounting a cable through a cable gland, 360° shielding

1. Put the threaded cap and the bushing on the cable. Strip the cable and leave about 1
cm of the outer shield
2. Bend the shield over the metal part of the bushing. The shield is too long if it
reaches the rubber part.
Page Document No Rev
15 (24) 4V53L1540 -

3. Tighten the cable gland so that tightness between the cable and the gland is
achieved.

Holes not used for cable glands are to be plugged with locking plugs!

6.2.2 CIB grounding

In order to achieve reliability and fulfil EMC requirements the CIB must be grounded
with an earthing strap. The earthing strap should be as short as possible.

Picture 3; Earthing strap, Wärtsilä Mat.No. 0050A022801

The earthing strap is fastened with a M6x12 to the CIB, picture 4.

Picture 4; Earthing point on the CIB for earthing strap

6.3 Mounting of CIB on an electronic module

When mounting CIB on an electronic module following instructions are to be followed.

6.3.1 Mounting on CCM10

1. Remove the cover from the CCM10
2. Check that the sealing is not damaged. If damaged => change
3. Put the CIB on top of the CCM10
4. Use M6*12 hexagon socket screws for fastening
5. Tighten the screws even so that tightness is achieved between CCM10 and CIB
6. Connect the two Deutsch connectors and tighten the locking screws
Page Document No Rev
16 (24) 4V53L1540 -

6.3.2 Mounting on MCM700

1. Check that the sealing under the MCM700-CIB adjusting plate is not damaged. If
damaged => change
2. Place a teflon plate between the MCM700 and the CIB with the adjusting plate
(Wärtsilä material number for insulation plate 0032D069001)
3. Fasten the mounting screws, (screws to be 10mm longer than the original MCM700
mounting screws). (MCM700 to be mounted on insulating rubber dampers)
4. Connect the Deutsch connectors and tighten the locking screws

6.3.3 Mounting on SSM701

1. Check that the sealing under the adjusting plate is not damaged. If damaged =>
change
2. Put the CIB with the adjusting plate on top of the SSM701 and fasten the mounting
screws, (screws to be 6mm longer than the original SSM701 mounting screws).
3. Connect the Deutsch connectors and tighten the locking screws

7 CIB internal wiring

When connecting wires in CIB the route should be carefully considered, otherwise you
will quite easily end up with wires going crisscross in the CIB.

Things to be considered when installing CIB:

− Begin with the multibus cable. This is probably the most difficult cable since there
are a lot of wires. Then proceed with the power cable, (90 – 110VDC).
− Other cables than the multibus cable and the power cable can preferably be routed
along the upper side of the CIB.
− In order to get a good looking and service friendly installation it is important that the
wires are to be cut to the right length before connecting them to the terminal strips.
− To prevent wear of wire insulation due to vibrations tie wraps are to be used for
fastening of all wires inside the CIB, distance between tie wraps max. 2-3cm.
− Inner shields to be continued inside the CIB
− End sleeves must be used on all wires
− Proper marking of wires should be used
− Pay attention to sharp edges
