MWANYAGETINGE HERITAGE

COUNCIL
NOVEMBER
20,2022
H.E. THE GOVERNOR
NYAMIRA COUNTY

Dear Sir,

RE SHARING OUR HERITAGE IN SCHOOLS AND PUBLIC

Mwanyagetinge Heritage council is a group that is tracing the roots our cultural
past with an aim of sharing the rich heritage of the past. We are making a
deliberate move to preserve and pass over both the intangible and tangible cultural
heritage which encompasses our Language, Legacy, ceremonies, past traditions,
cultural goods including sites and artifacts.
The group has three main pillars
Traditional /Social pillar
The group has put in place 35 units that are spearheading the dissemination of
Traditional knowledge to our community. The scope of knowledge covers our
language, Traditional ceremonies, medicine and morality. We are at the forefront
of identifying and celebrating our heroes and heroines.
Economic / Wealth pillar
The Heritage team is advocating for traditional way of wealth sharing,
empowerments and support to look for market for our products. We are also
advocating for venturing into international markets through the support of our
Governors.
Leadership.
We believe in Respect for our Leaders and public support. We also promote
traditional dispute resolutions an area that has faced a lot of bad publicity in our
community especially the killing of our elderly due to minor differences. We have
started a program to reach out to the youths and schools to promote cohesiveness
and our heritage. We had pilot sessions with students of Itibo girls in Kisii county
and Sengera Model girls in Nyamira county which were very successful.
We request for support as follows;
Facilitation to have elders (both male and female) elected from ward level to the
county. We intend to have a steering committee of 7 members comprising of 2
officers from the county and 5 members from the heritage group.
Have a preserved Heritage centre with all the traditional items, plants, animals in
place.
Set a Cultural day for Mwanyagetinge (Omogusii)
Start a school based ceremony for our boys and girls for the traditional knowledge
training (1week extension after closing)
Mark and protect all sacred sites and traditional shrines
Put in place a medical scheme for the seniors in the society

As the Heritage Council, we strive at ensuring that our heritage is managed and
conserved to enrich the lives of people now and for the future. Our target is to
empower our senior citizens to age gracefully, share with the past with adults,
youths and leave a legacy for the current and future generations.

We look forward to your positive response to our request.

Yours faithfully,

GEORGE NYAKUNDI
COORDINATOR
