CULTURAL BELIEFS AND PRACTICES

HEALTH

✔ "Masikugan ti hangin" might occur if underwear is left hanging outside the house during the

The old folks of the community believe that periods of menstruation women provide

a threat to their health. Traditional traditions and ideologies continue to exist today, including

the following:

✔ Girls should not take a bath on the first day of menstruation because they believe that it

can cause headache and psychological brain damage.


✔ On the onset of the first menstrual cycle, the girl must jump from the third step of

a staircase: this will facilitate 3 day regular monthly flow

✔ Sour food are prohibited as these will cause dysmenorrhoea.

COURTSHIP AND MARRIAGE

✔ When it comes to courtship, they are not practicing the traditional way which is "harand"

but rather, "pasyar-pasyar". Due to modernized technology nowadays, there is a faster or

more convenient way of expressing ones love. Texting has become practice in these

generations.

✔ The parents of the future groom visit the house of the future bride to ask for her hand.

This is referred to as "panangas-asawa." Upon approval, wedding plans are set.

✔ Giving of gifts to the bride's family is still practiced but not all the time.

BIRTHDAY

✔ When it comes to celebrating their birthdays, they prefer to prepare a party, for they believe

that this event would bring them closer to their families, relatives and friends as they will

have time to socialize and catch up even once in a while.

✔ They also prepare singing a birthday song before eating as the traditional way of celebrating

a birthday before the celebrant blows their candles. This is how they are accustomed to.
✔ One of the traditional practices during birthday occasions is Offering a crown and flower

while singing “pada-padaka” as they honor, welcome or celebrate the birthday of a person by

a significant group of the community.

✔ Others would prefer to go to church to offer thanks to God for the blessings and for another

year, mostly with their families.

✔ As part of their birthday practices people in the community set prayers (nagpapadasal) as

for their spiritual way of celebrating their birthdays which serve as thanking God.

WAKE AND BURIAL

The leave of love ones is really difficult to overcome especially in the

communities.

✔ They must also keep the wood called "atong " continues to produce smoke at all times in

front of the house to signify the death of a family member. This is to ward off bad spirits

from entering the house and to fetch the soul of the departed.

✔ During the funeral, the family will beheaded a chicken so that the spirit will not come

back to disturb the family.

✔ The face must be wash with water mixed with vinegar after the burial to wash away the

entire bad sign that may happen after the funeral at the cemetery.

✔ Black or white ribbon is tied on their forehead signify mourning.


✔ Wearing a mourning pin denotes grieving of a loved one.

✔ Breaking a pot when the body corpse is brought out from the house signifies that the soul

of the body, which is gone from its home.

BAPTISM

✔ Preparing foods for a visitors and sponsors as it was practice to the community that the 1 st

birthday celebration conjunction to the baptism.

✔ More sponsors, more give guidance to the baby, because they serves as the godparents or 2 nd

parents.

✔ Let the baby cry while in church since it was thought that the devil was being expelled out.
