Sheet 2: Motion
Tutorial Problems
P1. A motorist drives 12 km at 100 km/h and 12 km at 80 km/h along one straight
rood. What is his average speed for the trip?

P2. A particle moves according to the equation x (t) = 10t 2, where the position x is in
meters and t is in seconds. Find the average velocity for the time interval from 2.00
s to 4.00 s.

P3. On a dry road a car with good tires may be able to obtain a braking acceleration
of 4.90 m/s2. Calculate the stopping distance for an initial speed of the car of 50
km/h and of l00km/h. Calculate also the time required for stopping in each case.

P4. A small metallic ball is thrown upward with speed 15 m/s from the top of a
building that is 25 m high above the ground. The ball passes vertically beside the wall
of the building while falling to the ground. Take the starting point as the origin, then
calculate the velocity and the position (displacement) of that ball at times t = 1, 2, 3
seconds from the start of motion. Calculate also the time it needs to touch the
ground.

P5. The height of an ascending helicopter above the ground is given by h =3.00t 3,
where h is in meters and t is in seconds. At t =2.00 s, the helicopter releases a small
solid ball. How long after its release does the ball reach the ground? Neglect air
resistance.

P6. Consider a particle that moves in the x-y plane. The instantaneous position of the
particle is given by 𝑟⃗(𝑡) = (5𝑡 3 + 4𝑡 2 )𝑖̂ + (7𝑡 2 − 1.2𝑡 4 )𝑗̂ 𝑚/𝑠.
Calculate:
1- The displacement between time t = 3.5 s and time t = 6.2 s.
2- The Average velocity corresponding to the displacement in 1.
3- The velocity of the particle at time t = 7.1 s.
4- The acceleration of the particle at t = 5.0 s.

P7. A projectile is fired with an initial velocity vo that makes angle θ with the ground
level. Now, neglecting air resistance and considering the start point and landing point
of the projectile to be on the same ground level, calculate in terms of vo and θ:
1- The time required to reach the highest vertical level.
2- The total time of flight.
3- The maximum height.

4- The Range on the horizontal level. At which angle is the range maximum?
5- The Average velocity over the whole flight of that projectile.
6- As Homework, put numerical values of your choice for Vo and θ, then solve the
problem again.

P8. A projectile is fired with an initial velocity of 50 m/s that makes angle 42o with
the ground level. Now, neglecting air resistance and considering the start point and
landing point of the projectile to be on the same ground level, calculate:
1- The velocity vector of the projectile at t = 7.3 s, calculate also the instantaneous
speed at this moment.
2- The Displacement of the projectile from the origin at t = 7.3 s.

Homework Problems
1- A helicopter is flying in a straight line over a level field at a constant speed of
6.20 m/s and at a constant altitude of 9.50 m. A package is ejected horizontally
from the helicopter with an initial velocity of 12.0 m/s relative to the helicopter
and in a direction opposite the helicopter’s motion. (a) Find the initial speed of the
package relative to the ground. (b) What is the horizontal distance between the
helicopter and the package at the instant the package strikes the ground? (c)
What angle does the velocity vector of the package make with the ground at the
instant before impact, as seen from the ground?

2- You throw a ball from a cliff with an initial velocity of 15.0 m/s at an angle of
20.0° below the horizontal. Find its horizontal displacement and its vertical
displacement 2.30 s later.

3- A projectile is fired with an initial speed 30.0 m/s from level ground at a target
that is on the same ground level, at a horizontal distance R = 20.0 m. What are
the least and the greatest launch angles that will allow the projectile to hit the
target?
