PHYSICS HOLIDAY HOMEWORK


CLASS XI (2023-24)

• Instructions regarding the type of file required for the investigatory
was discussed.
• Assignment has to be done in the separate register i.e the
assignment register.
• Submission date: First week of July.
The Physics Holidays’ Homework comprises of two parts:

1. PHYSICS INVESTIGATORY PROJECT:

As you all are aware that in Physics Final Practicals , you are required to research
and investigate on any topic of Physics . This project should be submitted in the
form of a model/Physics game / Physics concept kit and supplemented with a
report file.This is an individual project. (If anyone is already making a Physics
based project for Science Exhibition need not go for this investigatory project).

The project report has to be printed.

2. PHYSICS ASSIGNMENT:

1. Two billiard balls, rolling on a flat table, have started moving from the same point. If
their x components of velocities are √3 m/s and 2 m/s. and y components of velocities
are 1m/s and 2m/s respectively, calculate the angle between their paths. Ans. 15o.

2. The position of a particle is given by r=3ti+2t2j+5k, where coefficients are in meters.


i. Find expression for the velocity and acceleration of the particle.
ii. Find the velocity of the particle in magnitude and direction at time=3s.
Ans. √153m/s, tan-1(4)

3. A particle starts from origin at t=0 with a velocity 5i m/s and moves in x-y plane under

action of a force which produced a constant acceleration of (3i+2j)m/s2. (a) What is
the y coordinate of particle at the instant its x-coordinate is 84m? (b) What is the
speed of the particle at this time? Ans. 36m, 25.9m/s

4. Find the component of a vector A=3i+2j along the direction of i+j and i-j

Ans 5/2(i+j) and ½(i-j).

5. A truck starts from rest and accelerates uniformly at 2.0 ms-2. At t=10s, a stone is
dropped by a person standing on the top of the truck (6 m high from the ground).
What are the (a) velocity, and (b) acceleration of the stone at t=11s? (Neglect air
resistance.)

6. A car travelling at a speed of 20m/s due north along the highway makes a right turn
on to a side road that head due east. It takes 50s for the car to complete the turn. At
the end of 50s, the car has a speed of 15m/s along the side road. Determine the
magnitude of average acceleration over the 50 second interval. Ans. 0.5ms-2

7. A person sitting in a train moving at constant velocity throws a ball vertically


upwards. How will the ball appear to move to an observer? (a) sitting inside the
train (b) standing outside the train.

8. A projectile when fired at a certain inclination has maximum range R. Find its
maximum height attained by it in terms of R. Ans. R/4.
9. A projectile is given an initial velocity of (i+2j). Find the Cartesian equation of its
path. (g=10m/s2) Ans. y=2x-5x2
10. What are the two angles of projection of a projectile projected with velocity 30m/s,
so that the horizontal range is 45m. [g=10m/s2] Ans. 15o or 75o
11. A fighter plane flying horizontally at an altitude of 1.5km with the speed of 720km/h
passes directly overboard an anticraft gun. At what angle from the vertical should
the gun be fired from the shell with the muzzle speed 400m/s to hit the plane in
shortest time? Ans. 30o with vertical
12. Find the angle of projection for a body whose range is ‘n’ times the maximum height

13. Two bodies are thrown with the same initial velocity at angles θ and 90-θ with the
horizontal. What will be the ratio of (i) maximum heights attained by them and (ii)
of horizontal ranges? Ans. tan2 θ, 1:1
14. A body of mass m is thrown with velocity u at an angle 30 o to the horizontal and
another body B of same mass is thrown with velocity u at an angle of 60o to the
horizontal. Find the ratio of the horizontal range and max. Height of A and B.
Ans. 1:1, 1:3

15. Galileo, in his book Two new sciences, stated that “for elevations exceed or fall short
of 45o by equal amounts, the ranges are equal”. Prove this statement.

16. A football player kicks a ball at an angle of 30o with an initial speed of 20m/s.
assuming that the ball travels in a vertical plane, calculate (a) the time at which the
ball reaches the highest point (b) the maximum height reached (c) the horizontal
range of the ball (d) the time for which the ball is in the air. g=10m/s2 Ans.

17. A boy stands at 78.4m from a building and throws a ball which just enters a window
39.2m above the ground. Calculate the velocity of projection of the ball. Ans.

18. From a point on the ground at a distance 15m from the foot of a vertical wall, a ball
is thrown at an angle of 45o which just clears the top of the wall and afterwards
strikes the ground at a distance 5m on the other side. Find the height of wall.
Ans. 3.75m

19. From the top of a tower 156.8m high a projectile is thrown up with a velocity of
39.2m/s, making an angle 30o with horizontal direction. Find the distance from the
foot of tower where it strikes the ground and the time taken by it to do so. Ans.

20. Prove that the maximum horizontal range is four times the maximum height attained
by the projectile, when fired at an inclination so as to have maximum range.
21. An aircraft is flying at a height of 3400m above the ground. If the angle subtended at
ground observation is 30o, what is the speed of aircraft? Ans. 182.2m/s

22. A bullet fired at an angle of 30o with the horizontal hits the ground 3km away. By
adjusting the angle of projection, can one hope to hit the target 5km away?

23. A fighter plane flying horizontally at an altitude of 1.5km with speed 720km/h passes
directly overhead an anti-aircraft gun. At what angle from the vertical should the gun
be fired for the shell with muzzle speed 600m/s to hit the plane? At what minimum
altitude should the pilot fly the plane to avoid being hit? Ans. sin-1(1/3) with
vertical, 16km

24. Two bodies A and B are projected simultaneously from points X and Y as shown
in fig. with velocities uA and uB respectively. Find the ratio of velocities for both

the bodies to collide. Ans.√2


25. A helicopter moving horizontally with a velocity of 360km/h has to drop a food
packet directly into a relief fund office. If the height of helicopter from the ground is
200m, at what distance the helicopter must be from the fund office when the
packet is dropped? Ans.640m,

26. What is the angular velocity of minute hand and hour hand of a clock? Ans. 1.7x10-
3rad/s, 1.45x10-4rad/s

27. An insect trapped in a circular groove of radius 12cm moves along the groove
steadily and completes 7 revolutions in 100s. (a) What is the angular speed, and the
linear speed of the motion? (b) Is the acceleration vector a constant vector? What is
its magnitude? Ans.0.44rad/s, 5.28cm/s, 2.3cm/s2

28. A stone is tied to the end of a string 80cm long is whirled in a horizontal circle with a
constant speed. If the stone makes 14 revolutions in 25s, what is the magnitude and
direction of acceleration of the stone? Ans. 9.9m/s2 (towards the center)
