Practice Questions on to apply One Dimensional Motion.

Problem 1 [48, 2V]

A particle moves according to the equation x=10t2, where x is in meters and t is in seconds. (a) Find the

average velocity for the time interval from 2.00s to 3.00s. (b) Find the average velocity for the time

interval from 2.00 to 2.10s

To start off, we need to get the velocity of each corresponding time. We can use this with a table to solve for
both.
F(x)=10t2
F(x)=10(2.00 s)2 = 10(4.00s)2 = 40 m/s
F(x)=10(2.30 s)2 = 10(2.10s) 2= 44.10 m/s
F(x)=10(3.00 s)2 = 10(3.00s) 2= 90 m/s

We can get the answer for (a.) by getting the change of velocity from 40 m/s and 90 m/s.

Thus the average velocity from the time interval 2.00 s and 3.00 s is 50.00 m/s.

We repeat the same for the time interval 2.00 s and 2.10 s.

Thus the average velocity from the time interval 2.00 s and 2.10 s is 41.00 m/s.

Problem 2 [48, 2V]

An athlete leaves one end of a pool of length L at t=0 and arrives at the other end at time t1. She swims

back and arrives at the starting position at time t2. If she is swimming initially in the

positive x direction, determine her average velocities symbolically in (a) the first half of the swim, (b)

the second half of the swim, and (c) the round trip. (d) What is her average speed for the round trip.

This asks us what are the formulas for these specific questions.

We use the definition of average velocity

(a) V1,x,ave=(Δt)1(Δx)1=t1L−0=+L/t1

(b) V2,x,ave=(Δt)2(Δx)2=t20−L=−L/t2

(c) To find the average velocity for the round trip, we add the displacement and time for each of the two halves
of the swim

Vx,ave,total=(Δt)total(Δx)total=t1+t2(Δx)1+(Δx)2=t1+t2+L−L=t1+t20=0

(d) The average speed of the round trip is the total distance the athlete travels divided by the total time for the
trip:

(d) The average speed of the round trip is the total distance the athlete travels divided by the total time for the
trip:

Vave,trip = total distance travelled / (Δt)total

= t1+t2∣(Δx)1∣+∣(Δx)2∣
= t1+t2∣+L∣+∣−L∣=t1+t22L
