LABORATORY SAFETY P2

Monday, 14 November 2022 8:50 am

Safety, dictionary meaning:

the condition of being protected from or unlikely to cause danger, risk, or injury.

Safety, objective meaning: To keep the integrity of the data safe.

Question: What is the use of the experiments?

A: To achieve data or information to interpret.

Hazard, dictionary meaning:

a source or a situation with the potential for harm in terms of human injury or ill health, damage to
property, damage to the environment, or a combination of these.

Risk, dictionary meaning:

a situation involving exposure to danger.

Laboratory Safety Equipment

Apparatus: Tools used in experiments in laboratories.

Equipment: General tools used.

Additional Laboratory apparatus:

• Medical Kits- Essential to make sure all injuries will be able taken care off.
• Lab Coats- These protect us to ensure that we have first protection from chemical spills.
• Dust Particle Mask- Masks are essential in laboratories to ensure we do not inhale harmful
fumes or powders.

Note: In professional practice, ID laces are not used, instead, they are pinned to uniforms. This is to
avoid accidents such knocking over equipment and as well as lowering the risk with moving
equipment.

In ph levels, 1-6 is acidic and 7-14 is basic.

Inquiry no. 1: Sir, In a situation where we need to get rid of a strong acid, is it necessary to add it with
an equally strong base to fully neutralize it?
A: You must first dilute the acid, then add the base.

Lead and Mercury (neurotoxins) are classified as heavy metals, that are attracted to fats.

Note: All MSDS have mandatory 16 sections.

Question: How do you classify the risk with a venomous spider?

A: Even though the venom is discharged in small amounts (not reaching the lethal dosages), it is
enough to cause great harm to a human.

Data and Results; Labster Chemistry Safety

Biofuel + Alcohol + Catalyst > Catalyst + Biofuel + Glycerol

The Product of Experimentation two phases was in a bottle that used to contain methanol and Algae
Oil Extract. The biodiesel top of the glycerol was separated. After the biodiesel was poured in
another container, we got the end result of a bottle of just biodiesel.

Methanol:

Algae Acetone:

Sodium hydroxide:

Acetic acid:
