CHAPTER 4
Hazard Identification, Risk
Assessment & Risk Control
(HIRARC)
Understanding of…

Hazard, Risk, & Danger

HAZARD

Definition:
 A source or situation with a potential for
harm in term of human injury or ill health,
damage to property and environment or
combinational of these @

 is something or situation that can cause

harm if not controlled.
RISK
Definition:

 Risk is a combination of likelihood and

the probability that a particular
occurrence or outcome and the
severity of the harm (injury or
damage).
DANGER:

Definition:
 Relative exposure to hazard.

 Means if the danger is not avoided, it will

cause death or serious injury
CLASSIFY /TYPES OF HAZARD.

1. Physical Hazard
2. Biological Hazard
3. Chemical Hazard Psychological
4. Hazard Ergonomic Hazard
WHY NEED TO
IDENTIFY
HAZARD?
 To keep workplace safe and healthy.
 Safeguard employee and all staff.
PHYSICAL HAZARD
BIOLOGICAL HAZARD

 Virus
 Fungus
 Bacteria
 Plasmodium
 Protozoa
CHEMICAL HAZARD

 Acid / Alkali
 Solvent
 Disinfectant
 Anesthetic Gas
 Cytotoxic Drugs
CHEMICAL HAZARD

1. Classification Based on Physicochemical Properties

 classified as either explosive, oxidizing, extremely flammable, highly
flammable or flammable

2. Classification Based on Health Effects

 classified as either Very Toxic, Toxic, Corrosive, Harmful or
Irritant
PSYCHOLOGICAL HAZARD

 Occupational Stress
 Drugs and substance addiction
 Depression, anxiety disorders
 Sexual harassment
ERGONOMIC HAZARD

 Repetitive Motion
 Musculoskeletal Injury
 Static Motion
 Visual Display Unit
 Lifting Weight
WHAT IS A RISK ASSESSMENT?

 A way of determining risks and dangers in work places.

 Risk assessments include analyzing the possible hazard that could occur within a
workplace and finding a solution in a safe manner. This avoiding injury to an
individuals and damage to property.

 If the hazard cannot be avoid in a safe way, then the risk assessment will say that
the activity shouldn’t be carried out.
RISK CONTROL
 Hierarchy of Control
1. Elimination
2. Substitution
3. Isolation
4. Engineering control
5. Administrative controls
6. Personal Protection Equipment (PPE)
1 - Elimination

 Fully protection

2 – Substitution

 Additional Control
