Section 3 - Hazards Identification

EMERGENCY OVERVIEW

Causes severe eye and skin burns. Causes severe burns of the mouth and throat.
May be harmful if swallowed. May cause respiratory tract irritation. Combustible
liquid and vapour.

Potential Health Effects

Eye: Besides eye irritation possible risk of serious damage to eyes can result.
Skin: May cause skin irritation/ burns.

Ingestion: Single dose oral toxicity considered to be low. The oral LD 50 for rats is
4780 mg/kg for Methyl diethanolamine. Small amounts swallowed incidental to normal
handling are not likely to cause injury. Ingestion may cause burns of mouth and throat.
Observations in animals include liver and kidney effects.

1
Inhalation: Excessive exposure may cause irritation to upper respiratory tract.
Chronic: Not available.

Section 4 - First Aid Measures

Eyes: Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 30 minutes, occasionally lifting the
upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid.
Skin: Get medical aid. Flush skin with plenty of water for at least 30 minutes while
removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Prompt medical attention is essential.
Ingestion: If swallowed, get medical aid. Do NOT induce vomiting unless directed to
do so by medical personnel.
Inhalation: Remove from exposure and move to fresh air immediately. If
unconscious, maintain adequate airway and respiration, get medical aid.

Notes to Physician: if burn is present, treat as any thermal burn, after

decontamination. Eye irrigation may be necessary for an extended period of time to
remove as much caustic as possible. Duration of irrigation and treatment is at the
discretion of medical personnel. May cause tissue destruction leading to stricture. If
lavage is performed, suggest endotracheal and/or esophagoscopic control. No specific
antidote. Supportive care. Treatment based on judgment of the physician in response
to reactions of the patient

Section 5 - Fire Fighting Measures

General Information: As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in

pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear.
During a fire, irritating and highly toxic gases may be generated by thermal
decomposition or combustion.
Extinguishing Media: Use agent most appropriate to extinguish fire. Use water
spray, dry chemical, carbon dioxide, or appropriate foam.
Flash Point: 88.9 deg C (PMCC)
Explosion Limits, Lower: Not Available
Upper: Not Available

Section 6 - Accidental Release Measures

General Information: Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated in

Section 8(iii).
Spills/Leaks: Absorb spill with inert material (e.g. vermiculite, sand or earth), then
place in suitable container. Clean up spills immediately, observing precautions in the
Protective Equipment section. Provide ventilation.

2
Section 7 – Handling and Storage

Handling: Spills of these organic liquids on hot fibrous insulations may lead to
lowering autoignitation temperature possibly resulting in spontaneous combustion.
Containers, even those that have been emptied, can contain vapours. Do not cut,
drill, grind, weld or perform similar operations on or near empty containers. Will
produce flammable vapours above flash point.
FOR INDUSTRY USE ONLY
Storage: Keep container closed when not in use. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated
area away from incompatible substances. Keep away from Heat Sources, Oxidizing
Agents, Acids.

Section 8 - Exposure Controls, Personal Protection

(i) Engineering Controls: Use adequate ventilation to keep airborne
