MOTION ALONG A STRAIGHT LINE


DISTANCE COVERED, DISPLACEMENT, AVG. SPEED AND AVG . VELOCITY.
1. A car travels a distance A to B at a speedof 60 km/hr and returns to A at a speed of 40 km/hr.(i)
What is the avg speed for the whole journey?(ii) What is the avg velocity?
2. A drunkard walking in a narrowlane takes 5 steps forward and 3 steps backward each step of 1
m long, per second and so on. Determine how long the drunkard takes to fall in a pit 15 m away
from the start.
3. A cyclist moving on a circular track of radius 100 m completes one revolution in 4minutes.
What is his (i) average speed (ii) avg velocity in one fuii revolution?
4. When two bodies moves uniformly towards each other, the distance between them decreases by
6 m/s. If both the bodies move in the same direction with their same speeds, the distance
between them increases by 4 m/s. what are the speeds of the two bodies?
5. A car travelled the first third of a distance x at a speed of 10km/h, the second third at a speed of
20km/hr and the last third at a speed of 60km/hr. determine the average speed of the car over the
entire distance x.
6. A table clock has its minute hand 5cm long. Find the average velocity of tip of the minute hand
(a) Between 6am to 6:15am. (b) Between 6am to 6:30pm.
7. A ship moves due east at 12km/h for 1 hour and then turns exactly towards south to move for an
hour at 5 km/h. calculate the average velocity for the given motion.
8. A body travelling along a straight line traversed 1/3 rd of the total distance with a velocity 4m/s.
the remaining part of the distance was covered with a velocity 2m/s for half the time and with
velocity 6m/s for the other half of the time. What is the mean velocity averaged over the whole
time of motion.
9. The distance x of a particle moving in one dimension, under the action of a constant force is
related to time t by the equation, t = √𝑥 + 3, where x is in meters and t in seconds. Find the
displacement of the particle when its velocity is zero.
10. The position of an object moving along the y axis is given by y = a + bt where a=8.5m and b=
2.5m/s2 and t is in seconds. What is the velocity at t = 0 s and t = 2 s? What is the average velocity
between t = 2 s and t = 4 s?
11. The speed- time graph of a particle moving along a fixed direction shown in figure. Find:
(i)distance travelled by the particle between 0 second to 10 second. (ii) average speed between
this interval. (iii)the time when the speed was minimum. (iv)the time when the speed was
maximum.
UNIFORMLY ACCELARATED MOTION
12. A particle starts with initial velocity 3ms-1 along the positive x-direction and it accelarates
uniformly at the rate of 0.6ms-2. (a)Find the distance travelled in the first 3 seconds. (b)How
much time does it take to reach the velocity 9m/s?(c) How much distance will it cover in
reaching the velocity 9ms-1?
13. A particle having initial velocity 5m/s moves with a constant accelaration 2m/s 2, for a time 10 s
along a straight line. Find the displacement of the particle in the last 1 s and the total distance
travelled in 10 seconds.
14. A ball is thrown vertically upwards with a velocity of 20m/s from a the top of a multi-storey
building. The height of the point from where the ball is thrown is 25m from the ground.(a) How
high will the ball rise?(b) How long will it be before the ball hits the ground?(g=10m/s 2)
15. A stone falls from a cliff and travels 24.5m in the last second before it reaches the ground at the
foot of the cliff. Find the height of the cliff.
16. Four balls are dropped from the top of a tower at intervals of of one-one second. The first ball
reaches the ground after 4s of dropping. What are the distances between first and second,
second and third, third and fourth balls at this instant?
17. A body starting from rest accelerates uniformly along a straight line at the rate of 10 /m 2 for 5
seconds. It moves for 2 second with uniform velocity of 50m/s. Then it retards uniformly and
comes to rest in 3s. Draw velocity – time graph of the body and find the total distance travel by
the body.
18. A car moving along a straight highway with the speed of 72kmh -1 is brought to a stop within a
distance of 100m. What is the retardation of the car and how long does it take for the car to
stop?
19. A driver takes 0.2 s to apply the brakes after he sees a need for it. This is called the reaction
time of the driver. If he is driving car at speed of 54kmh-1 and the brakes cause a deceleration of
6.0 ms-2. Find the distance travelled by the car after he sees the need to put the brakes.
20. On a foggy day two drivers spot each other when they are just 80 meters apart. They are
travelling at 72km h-1 and 60km h-1, respectively both of them applied brakes retarding their car
at the rate of 5 m s -2. Determine whether they avert collision or not.
21. A body covers 12 m in 2nd and 20m in 4th second. How much distance will it cover in 4 seconds
after the 5th second?
22. If x, y, z be the distance described by a particle during the p th, qth and rth second respectively.
Prove that: (q – r) x + (r – p) y + (p – q) z =0.
23. A ball thrown up is caught by the thrower after 4 s. How high did it go and with what velocity
was it thrown? How far was it below the highest point 3 s after it was thrown?
24. A balloon is ascending at the rate of 9.8 ms -1 at a height of 39.2 m above the ground when a
food packet is dropped from the balloon. After how much time and with what velocity does it
reach the ground? Take g = 9.8 ms-2.
25. Two balls are thrown simultaneously, A vertically upwards with a speed of 20 ms -1 from the
ground, and B vertically downwards from the height of 40 m with the same speed and along the
same line of motion. At what point do the two balls collide? Take g = 9.8 ms -2.
26. From the top of a tower 100 m in height a ball is dropped and at the same time another ball is
projected vertically upwards from the ground with velocity of 25 m s -1. Find when and where
the two balls will meet. Take g= 9 .8 m/s 2
RELATIVE VELOCITY
27. Two buses A and B are at positions 50 m and 100 m from the origin at time t = 0. They start
moving in the same direction simultaneously with uniform velocity of 10 ms -1 and 5 ms-1.
Determine the time and position at which A overtakes B.
28. A driver of a car travelling at 52km/h, applies the brakes and decelerates uniformly. The car
stops in 5s. Another driver going at 34km/h applies his brakes and stops after 10s. On the same
graph paper plot the speed vs time graph for the two cars. Which of the two cars travelled
farther after the brakes were applied?
29. A car A is moving at 10m/s on a straight road, is ahead of car B moving in the same direction at
6 m/s. Find the velocity of A relative to B and vice-versa.
30. Two parallel train tracks run north-south. Train A moves north with a speed of 54km/h and train
B moves south with a speed of 90km/h. what is the (i) relative velocity of B with respect to
A(ii)relative velocity of ground with respect to B(iii)Velocity of a monkey running on the roof
of train A against its motion with a velocity of 18km/h with respect to train A as observed by a
man standing on the ground.
