Title of the Lesson: Climate Change
Activity 1: My Carbon Footprint

CONCEPTS

CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION AND MITIGATION

 Climate change mitigation revolves mainly on how we can limit our carbon dioxide release.
Mitigation efforts now focus on reduction of greenhouse gases emissions to slow the rate of
climate change in which natural ecosystems can adapt to the changes. Mitigation schemes
might not solve problems right away but are urgent for us to avoid grievous scenarios in
the latter half of our century.
 As defined by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Climate Change
Adaptation (CCA) is the process of adjustment to actual or expected climate and its effects.
With adaptation we seek to lessen the severity of the harm we will receive or at least try to
get a beneficial opportunity from the changes we expect to happen. Adaptation happens
through human intervention strategically crafted in anticipation of the changes to occur
using available climate data. Adaptation often time intimidates and seems complex with
the nature of the word itself. The key word to remember and emphasize is “adjustment”.

FOOTPRINT AND CLIMATE SHADOW

 Carbon Footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gasses emissions caused by the
products and services utilized by an individual Many common practices can be counted as
carbon footprint reduction like conserving electricity, using less of motorized
transportation, avoiding excessive consumption, and many others.
 A carbon footprint is more about measuring individual carbon emissions after individual
actions. A climate shadow relates to all major actions that can’t be measured precisely but
impact and influence people in a climate-positive way.
 The carbon footprint takes into account your consumption especially on electricity, water,
food, transport, and waste. Your carbon shadow extends not only to your consumption
patterns but also on how your other life choices influence climate emergency. It is your
carbon footprint combined with what you do for work, how you save and invest money,
how you vote, and how much you talk about climate change, among others.

Procedure
1.Evaluate your carbon emission by checking the appropriate point/s for each given activity.

How did you score?

20-50 - You’re a Green /King and globally aware consumer! Keep up the good work.
50-80 - You’ve made a start but there are more you can do to reduce your ecological footprint.
80-110 - You still have a long way to go; it is best to start now.

IV. DATA AND OBSERVATION

Guide Questions

Q1. What is your total score?

Q2. What is your highest source of carbon emission?
Q3. What is your lowest source of carbon emission?

Activity 2: My Carbon Footprint Version 2.0

Procedures
1. Compute you own carbon footprint using
the calculator application on:https://www.footprintcalculator.org/
2. As you arrive with the webpage, click “Take the First Step”
3. Answer all the 13 evaluation questions honestly. You may answer based on your lifestyle
pre pandemic or during the pandemic.
4. After you finish, you may opt to have the results on your email or just
view it through the net. (You need to take note of your results so take screenshots if you
will not have it via your email.)
5. Note the number of earths needed if all will live like you.
6. Rank your consumption categories with 1 as highest and 5 as lowest (Ex. 1. Food,
2. Goods, 3. Shelter, 4. Services, 5. Transport)

Reflection:
1.How do you feel about your Ecological Footprint?
2.What are your realizations?
3.What are your ways forward?

Activity 3: STOP DISASTER Online Game

Procedure
1. 1. Go to https://www.stopdisastersgame.org/stop_disasters/
2. Wait for the game to load. Click Launch Game.
3. Read the game instructions.
4. Click Play Game. Choose a scenario that is more likely to happen in your community except for
earthquakes. Choose Easy as the Difficulty Level.
5. Read the short briefer and the goal for their chosen scenario.
6.Take a screenshot/s as proof of your accomplishment in the game.

Reflection:
1.How did you prepare your community for your chosen disaster?
2. What are the challenges that you faced to prepare the community for your chosen disaster?
3. How did you overcome these challenges?

Activity 4: It’s Not Too Late!

1. Attach pictures/photos (minimum of 5 photos) on how the members of your family engage in
different activities that will help lessen the effects of climate change. Write a short
description/caption for each picture.
