INTRODUCTION OF THE BUSINESS

Jute is a naturally occurring or cultivated vegetable fiber. Jute fabric is made by spinning jute

fiber into strong threads and weaving it. It is known as golden fiber because of its shiny and

soft texture. It is the strongest natural fiber on the planet.

Since the seventeenth century, jute bags and jute products have been manufactured for

commercial use in India. Plastic gradually engulfed the jute market and replaced the majority

of jute products, but with the disadvantages and dangers of plastic revealed, jute bags have

successfully re-entered the market. All credit goes to increased awareness about using eco-

friendly products and government go-green initiatives.

Jute bags are strong, inexpensive, and reusable, with no negative consequences. Jute bags

were primarily used for sacking agricultural produce, sand, fertilizer, and cement. Jute bags

are now used for a variety of purposes, including shopping bags, lunch bags, sling bags,

purses, promotional gifts, travel bags, water bottle covers, and school bags.

Stirrer, Water Drum, tubes, mugs, clips, etc., Cottage Steamer, Electric Fittings, Scissors and

The global jute bags are estimated at US$ 1.2Bn in 2022 and is projected to reach US$

1.9Bn by 2032, at a CAGR of 4.9% from 2022 to 2032. According to the study, the

global jutebags market is estimated to generate an incremental opportunity of US$ 783

Mn during the forecast period.

BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES

 It is essential to select the appropriate market segment for a successful business. The

primary requirements for jute bags must be known.

 Jute is now used to make shopping bags, ladies' vanity bags, purses, and college bags.

 Because the female population is more interested in shopping, jute bags are to be

designed with ladies' fashion in mind first.

 Aside from continuing own jute handbag and purse business, partnering with some

small-scale shops and supplying jute bags to them as carrying bags could be done.

 Jute bags are used in the packaging of many food items that are delivered online.

Hence, such restaurants could be contacted.

SWOT ANALYSIS

Strengths

1. Eco-Friendly products

2. Products with exclusive quality and the cheapest price

3. Skilled manpower with low cost

4. Enough raw material supplies

Weaknesses

1. Capital constraints

2. Jute products are not sustainable like plastic, polypropylene products

Opportunities

1. Provide more greener solution

2. Increasing market demand

Threats

1. Abundance supply of plastic or polypropylene products

2. Political instability

3. Huge competition
PORTER’S FIVE FORCES MODEL

Jute, the golden fiber, meets all standards for “safe” packaging in view of being a natural,

renewable, biodegradable, and eco-friendly product.

SUPPLIER POWER

 Primarily the suppliers of raw jute to end consumers are farmers in small villages.

They yield comparatively less supplier power because their scale of operation is low

and they have an incentive to switch to growing rice on the same fields. This might

altogether stop the production of jute and create havoc for mill workers and

dependants.

 Supplier power in case of a middleman is reasonably from medium to high. They

perform essential functions like assembling and storing the crop, transporting it to the

secondary market and financing various transactions related to it.

 In cases of the paucity of raw jute for mills they draw a hard bargain in their favour.

BUYER POWER

 The buyers’ power is collectively significant as to mostly the price of jute is set

depending on the demand.

 Of thirty major primary commodities traded internationally, only about six have as

much price and supply instability as jute.

 Jute has lost a major part of its market share to synthetics and therefore demand is

very sensitive to price increases, but not nearly as sensitive to price decreases.

ENTRY BARRIER

 Low profitability due to declining market. Not much research and development have

gone into this sector and therefore, advanced technical know-how is missing.
 Government has been taking active steps to revive the industry by introducing

regulatory measures and prescribing reservation of commodities to be packed in Jute.

 The Government attempts to provide as much reservation as possible to utilize the

jute crop that is produced in the country, without creating the bottle- neck in the

supply-distribution chain of the commodities.

SUBSTITUTES

 The threat of substitutes is very large because jute is mainly used as a fibre in the

production of the end product and there are a number of manmade and natural fibres

that can act as very close substitutes.

 Jute is a flexible packaging material. It faces being substituted by other flexible

packaging materials like plastic; nylon and other manmade fibres and also forms non-

flexible packaging materials – boxes, cartons, and aluminum.

 Latest innovations like modified atmosphere packaging cans, which seal in the air to

retain freshness, or smart materials that can breathe selective gases and keep food

unspoilt.

 Considering that currently all over the world, there is an over capacity of cotton

production and falling demand, downward trend of cotton prices will tend to lower

demand for jute textiles as it is the closest substitute having the same natural appeal.
COMPETITION

 Low market share causes firm to fight for market share; with synthetic fibre eating up

the major chunk of the market share competition has intensified amongst the rivals

within the industry.

 Low switching costs increase rivalry. When a customer can easily switch from one

product to the other there is a struggle to capture customers; with alternatives to fibre

products that are available at cheaper rates, the switching cost for customers is

significantly low and hence, existing industries must fight for the market share.

 The eco-friendly wave engulfing the public and government supporting use of jute

products investment in this field has become significantly profitable. This has

attracted the attention of new players who are willing to invest in this industry and

thus increase the competition for existing manufacturers.
