Chemistry Exam 2

1- In an experiment , 6.5 g of zinc granules are allowed to react with excess 1 mol dm -3 sulphuric acid.

a)Write a balanced equation for the reaction between zinc and aqueous sulphuric acid.

b)Based on the balanced equation you wrote in a) above calculate the maximum volume of hydrogen
gas at rtp which can be generated from the experiment using 6.5 g of zinc granules.

RAM H=1 Zn=65 S=32 O=16

I mole of gas occupies 24 dm-3 at rtp.

2-When a strong acid is titrated with a strong base, the change in pH which occurs can be used to determine the
end point of the titration. The pH will change sharply at 7.0 at the end point of the titration. A pH meter can be
used to measure pH during the reaction. Figure 1 shows 10 pH changes to determine the endpoint of the titration.

The acid used is 20.0cm3 of 0.005 mol dm-3 sulphuric acid solution. The base is sodium hydroxide of unknown
concentration. Reading I represents the pH of 20.0 cm 3 of sulphuric acid at the start of the experiment. Readings II
to X represents the pH readings when various volumes of sodium hydroxide are added to the sulphuric acid
solution. The volumes of sodium hydroxide solution added are indicated in figure 1 .
Figure 1.PH meter when various volumes of sodium hydroxide Table 1

are added to 20.0 cm3 of sulphuric acid.

i) What is meant by each of the following

a) pH scale

b) The end point of an acid base titration.

ii)Complete table 1 by recording the missing pH meter readings from Figure 1.

iii) Using graph paper and the data in table 1, plot a graph of pH against volume of sodium hydroxide
added.

iv) a)Use the graph to determine the volume of sodium hydroxide which reacts completely with the 20
cm3 of 0.005 mol dm-3 sulphuric acid.

v) Write the equation for the reaction between sulphuric acid and sodium hydroxide.

vi)Calculate each of the following

a) The number of moles of sulphuric acid in 20 cm 3 of sulphuric acid used

b) The number of moles of sodium hydroxide in the volume of sodium hydroxide used in a) iv)
c) The number of moles of sodium hydroxide in 1 dm -3 of this solution.

3) Potassium carbonate(K2CO3) and zinc metal (Zn)are both treated with an excess of dilute nitric acid in
separate experiments. State the expected observations and write balanced chemical equations to
explain any reactions that take place. Give the chemical test(s) which may be used to identify any gases
produced.

4)

i) Write an ionic equation for the reaction taking place in the flask.

ii) what is the volume of hydrogen collected in the syringe.

iii) how many moles of hydrogen was collected at rtp? (I mole of gas at rtp has a volume of 24 dm 3)

iv) how many moles of magnesium was used up?

5) Bases are important chemicals used in important area in the home, laboratory and industry. They can
be classified in various ways

I) distinguish among the following terms used in classifying bases

A) alkali

B) strong alkali

C) weak alkali

Ii) Give an example each of a strong alkali and a weak alkali

Iii) Lime is one of the most widely used and cheapest industrial chemicals. It is made by heating
limestone (CaCO3).

Write a chemical equation for the formation of lime from limestone.
