Vivian and Noelle both leave the park at the same time, but in opposite directions.

If Noelle travels 5
mph faster than Vivian and after 8 hours, they are 136 miles apart, how fast in mile per hour is each
traveling?

Answer:

If they are travelling in opposite directions, their total distance is the 136.  So add their distances
together to get 136.

Let, x = Vivan’s speed and x + 5 = Noelle’s speed

They each travel for 8 hours,

Formula: Speed x Time = Distance

 x(8) + (x+5)8 = 136

8x + 8x + 40 = 136
 16x = 136 – 40
 16x = 96
 X=6

Vivan travels at 6mph.

To find Noelle’s speed, we have to substitute the value of x in (x+5)

 (x + 5)
 (6+5)
 11

So, Noelle’s speed is 11 mph.

Vivan travels 6 x 8 = 48 miles

Noelle traveles (11 x 8) = 88 miles
