Requirements:
Vivian and Noelle both leave the park at the same time, but in opposite directions. If Noelle travels 5 mph
faster than Vivian and after 8 hours, they are 136 miles apart, how fast in mile per hour is each travelling?
- Vivian and Noelle are at the same point at the same time
- They leave the park at the same time
- Suppose Vivian is going to the west and Noelle due east
Vivian: x mph
Noelle: x + 5 mph
Procedure 5. Solution
Noelle is 5 mph faster than Vivian. So, after 8 hours of being apart from each other, Noelle is 40 miles
apart more than Vivian.
Since Noelle has travelled 40 miles than Vivian, they are now 136-40 = 96 miles apart from each other.
94 miles indicates the distance of Vivian and Noelle from the origin point with the same speed
So, both the two will cover 48 miles with the same speed.
But Noelle travelled 40 miles more which also indicates that Noelle travels faster than Vivian – and it is 5
mph faster.
Both of the two travelled at 8 hours, so the speed is given by the formula distance over time.
