AFLSAMOA ready for strong finish to year

AFLSAMOA has some big plans for the rest of 2011 and beyond, with a new development pathway currently being reviewed and 10 schools participating in the all-schools tournament, 6 schools coming from Upolu and 4 from Savaii. The Oceania Youth U/17 Cup is around the corner with selection day to be held in late November at the schoolboys tournament.

Aussie Rules implemented into Faleata Colleges Sports Day

On the 2nd of September 2011, Faleata College held their annual sports Carnival only this years carnival was something special, to mark the schools introduction to Aussie Rules the School decided with AFLSAMOA to base their sports day around Aussie rules, a day that incorporated basic skills of Aussie Rules Football and the fundamentals of the game. Each house competed in different activities that saw the Hand Pass and Drop Punt being used. We then were lucky enough to see houses compete against each other in a modified game of Aussie rules for House points. The yellow squad were to strong and held off a gallant fight back from the blue house. Congratulations to Faleata College for what was a great day.

Aussie Rules Clinics Give Villages an Opportunity

AFLSAMOA has ventured to Lepa/Lotofaga College for a week to help develop the game in the village, and promote a healthy lifestyle with the villagers. The Clinics were led by AFLSAMOA Development Officer Gabel Stathis, and ran for a week and a half every morning for 2 hours during term and school holidays. Aussie Rules now being a sport of choice. The clinics were a huge success with 60 students partaking in the program over the week and a half, I hope to return in 6 weeks to see how the students are developing. said AFLsamoas Gabel Stathis. Lepa/Lotofaga being the College South Pacific selected player Aviata Siuta hails from and who has just returned from representing the Pacific team who played against the World team. The next school to have a taste of Aussie Rules football is Aleipata College, Development Officer Gabel Stathis will be visiting the College, the week of the 19th of September.

Faleata College gets a taste of Aussie Rules

First school of the year to get a taste of Aussie Rules Football was Faleata College. Clinics were run in the last two weeks of August and the students Physical Education classes where transformed into Aussie Rules skill sessions. The students were taught all the basic skills and fundamentals of the game. All Under 16 students at the college where fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to participate in after school clinics where the students further developed their skills. The Students at Faleata College were a pleasure to teach as they were always listening and wanting to better their individual skills and were keen to learn more about the game. As a coach I found this to be very rewarding as well Stathis says. The Clinics will revisit the Faleata on the week of the 26th of September. Hope to see you there!
