Explain the main stages of legal research. Support with

suitable example.
Answer : Essential steps of legal research include identifying a legal problem or
issue, discovering information about such problem or issue, and developing
explanations or arguments about the problem. Which is example for identified
the problem is the research problem may be something the agency identifies as
a problem, some knowledge or information that is needed by the agency, or the
desire to identify a recreation trend nationally. In the example in table 2.4, the
problem that the agency has identified is childhood obesity, which is a local
problem and concern within the community. This serves as the focus of the
study. Second for discovering information about such problem, that example is
the programmer has identified childhood obesity as the problem and the
purpose of the study. This topic is very broad and could be studied based on
genetics, family environment, diet, exercise, self-confidence, leisure activities,
or health issues. All of these areas cannot be investigated in a single study;
therefore, the problem and purpose of the study must be more clearly defined.
The programmer has decided that the purpose of the study is to determine if
walking 10,000 steps a day for three days a week will improve the individual's
health. This purpose is more narrowly focused and researchable than the
original problem. And the end for developing explanation about the problem
the example is The researcher now analyzes the data according to the plan. The
results of this analysis are then reviewed and summarized in a manner directly
related to the research questions. In the obesity study, the researcher
compares the measurements of weight, percentage of body fat, and cholesterol
that were taken at the first meeting of the subjects to the measurements of the
same variables at the final program session. These two sets of data will be
analyzed to determine if there was a difference between the first measurement
and the second measurement for each individual in the program. Then, the data
will be analyzed to determine if the differences are statistically significant. If the
differences are statistically significant, the study validates the theory that was
the focus of the study. The results of the study also provide valuable
information about one strategy to combat childhood obesity in the community.

What are the importance of legal research. Discuss in detail.

(6 marks)
Answer : In most instances, the purpose of legal research is to find support for a
specific legal issue or decision. For example, attorneys must conduct legal
research if they need court opinions (that is, case law) to back up a legal
argument they are making in a motion or brief filed with the court.
Alternatively, lawyers may need legal research to simply provide clients with
accurate legal guidance. And in the case of law students, they often use legal
research to complete memos and briefs for class. But these are just a few of the
situations in which legal research is necessary. Conclusion is important of legal
research is to search for relevant authorities who will help them find an answer
to a legal problem or issue.

Question 2 (10 marks)

Differentiate between legal research and social research.
Provide the related details and
examples.
Answer : Legal research is the process of finding the law that governs an activity
and materials that explain or analyze that law. Legal research includes various
processes ranging from gathering information to analyzing a problem’s facts
and communicating the investigation results. Doing research aims to add new
knowledge to the existing knowledge in an area of interest. Legal research
means scientific and purposive investigation or inquiry of a problem or issue of
any discipline. Likewise, legal research is a scientific investigation into a legal
issue or problem and the process of gathering evidence or information for
ascertaining an assumption or verifying some hypotheses.
Like other research activities, legal research is a systematic and methodical
study directed toward developing new knowledge or verifying existing
knowledge. Legal research is not merely concerned with the technical
knowledge of the law. Rather one of the purposes of legal research is to find
philosophical or policy arguments in law. Different to social research, social
research is the study of social trends, dynamics and principles that exist
between individuals and within societies. Professionals perform social research
in order to better understand the social factors that motivate and influence
human beings and to analyze how and why humans interact with each other.
This broad category of research includes topics in many social science fields,
such as psychology, sociology and anthropology. Organizations may use social
research to improve their marketing practices, and government institutions can
use this research to inform legislature and other policies.
