Mousefolk

Small and agile, mousefolk are known as skilled acrobats, farmers and a generally gentle
race of beastfolk. Though they are among the smaller races around, mousefolk are not as timid
as they may first appear; many a great warrior has risen from this race of diminutive rodent in
times of strife.

Small and Nimble

Mousefolk are not a tall or muscular race; their tallest members only come up to a mere
3'11", and their build is more toned than bulky. In essence, their body type would be best
described as having the proportions of an adult packed into the small frame of a child. They are
covered almost completely in fur bar their shins, forearms and tails, which are covered in fine,
delicate hairs that are almost unnoticeable to the naked eye.
Murine fur color ranges from deep brown to snow white, but the most common hue to
find among this race is chestnut brown. For males, their hair is typically cropped flush with their
fur in the back, but allowed to grow shaggy in the top and sides; variations on this haircut allow
for one side to be worn long and kept in a braid, although this is viewed as a more effeminate
styling in most circles. For females, the hair is allowed to grow long, almost down the middle of
the back, and is normally kept up in a bun or chignon, but braids and curls are not uncommon
among more well-to-do mousefolk women.

Short on Time, Why Waste It?

Mousefolk live fairly short lives compared to other races. On average, most mice only live
around 50 years; while they are capable of living longer, their lives are often cut short by the
injustices of their prejudiced neighbors, who often treat them as the vermin they resemble. As
such, long lived individuals are rarity that are often treasured. This short lifespan fills most
mousefolk with a sense of urgency and a desire to explore. Laziness and sloth are seen as dire
conditions, while studious and efficient individuals are held in high esteem. Compared to other
races, they might seem impatient or pushy.
Mousefolk are curious and adventurous, but also loyal and steadfast companions. They
find grudges and long-standing feuds to be a waste of their already short time in this world, and
find the generations-long rivalries of dwarf, elf and some human families utterly baffling. As an
extension of this, mousefolk in general are more likely to show mercy to their opponents in
battle when possible.
Individual mousefolk are often inquisitive and playful; even the most steadfast and stoic
of mousefolk adventurers have a penchant for pranks, jokes, and harmless fun. Their sense of
urgency gives them in life gives a mouse adventurer an undeniable determination to succeed,
and an almost bottomless well of optimism. It is very hard to totally crush their spirits, as their
optimism and determination just keeps pushing them onward in the face of even the staunchest
of adversities.

Get Out and See the World

Mousefolk who put down the plow in favor of seeking adventure might be motivated by
the thrill of it all — for adventure itself, for personal fame and glory, or perhaps simply to help
others. Other mice might be called to adventure out of desperate need; their village might be
suffering a blight or has been raided and everyone has been taking into slavery.

size or smaller to hide inside. Creatures that are unaware of the burrow and that are searching

with advantage and will count as a surprise attack.
Deerfolk
Strong and noble, deerfolk are renowned as warriors, craftsmen and diplomats in many
parts, and are generally considered the most cultured of beastfolk. Though they tend to tower
over many races, deerfolk are gentle giants, always seeking a peaceful resolution before resorting
to violence, but woe be unto the soul that earns their wrath.

Noble Strength
Deerfolk are a tall, muscular race that sit between 5’10” and 6’6” for males (not including
antlers) and 5’7” and 5’11” for females; males often have a large and powerful build while
females tend to be curvy and plump, but not excessively so. All deerfolk are covered in fur from
head to tail, and have hooves on their feet, with hoof-like coverings on the end of their fingers.
Male deerfolk have antlers, while females normally do not.
Deerfolk fur is almost always brown of some variety, be it light or dark, but a general
trend is towards darker fur. Hair among this race also tends to be of darker tones, from umber
to pitch black. Males tend to style their hair with a braid on either side of the head that fall in
front of the ears and a short top or may put their hair in a bun at the base of the skull;
additionally, it is common for males to out decorations on their antlers. Female hairstyles tend
to either put their hair in a loose bun in a similar fashion to the males, or they put their hair into
braided loops that pass in front of the ears and behind the head.

Perspective and Reflection

Among the longer-lived races of beastfolk, deerfolk on average live between 60-80 years,
and it common for many to live longer if they do not succumb to disease, war or chance mishap.
Their long lifespans compared to many other races of beastfolk give them an oft-needed
perspective on current events, and often leads them to positions of leadership within mixed
communities. Self-reflection is a key concept in deerfolk culture; individuals are expected to
reflect on their past and making the same mistake multiple times is seen as an indication that an
individual is not very insightful or self-aware.
It is fairly common to hear deerfolk described as haughty, arrogant or prideful, and this
is not an unfair accusation. Deerfolk take formalities, manners and courtesy very seriously and
are loathe to interact with those who show no understanding of baseline manners. However, to
say that they are uncaring about others is inaccurate; though they care not for lack of manners,
many deerfolk are keen on empathy and understanding, and can be counted on as trusted
confidants and advisors.
Individual deerfolk tend to be patient, self-conscious and serious. Their emphasis on
self-reflection produces minds that are always thinking about how to better themselves and
push themselves harder and further. Their near-obsession with formalities is often manifested
by a no-nonsense public demeanor that does not budge when faced with adversity. Cervine
emphasis on empathy makes most deerfolk among the most diplomatic and conflict-averse
races, as well as among the most patient; however, their patience is not infinite, and individual
deerfolk can be quite irritable and frustrated when their patience begins to wear thin with
others.
Enlightenment and Self-Improvement
While it is uncommon for deerfolk to actively seek out a life of adventure, those that do
might be doing so to push oneself, or to gain a new perspective on their life. Other deerfolk that
take up the life of an adventurer might wish to make amends by proving that they have learned
from some grievous mistake or wish to avenge a longstanding wrong against their community.

Otterkin
Cantankerous and quarrelsome are the two best words to describe otterkin. Stubborn,
proud and absolutely fearless, otterkin are among the most fearsome of all beastfolk on the
battlefield.

Stubborn Swimmers
Lean, slender and slick-furred, otterkin are strong swimmers that stand between 4’8”
and 5’6”; while not the tallest of races, they make up for their lack of height with toned muscle.
Both males and females tend to have gently curved frames lined with brown fur that fades to tan
or beige in the cheeks, neck and belly, and as such tend to be regarded as a rather androgynous
race in appearance, with females only having a slight bust that would be considered flat-chested
by other races’ standards. Otterkin also have pronounced webbing between their fingers and
toes and a thick, rudder-like tail.
Perhaps due to their androgynous appearance, much of otterkin fashion is shared
between males and females; both tend to fashion their black or brown hair into pony tails or
braids; dreadlocks are also a common staple. Males tend to also grow out the fur around their
muzzles into mustaches and beards. Piercings are not uncommon, and usually take the form of
either a nosering or earring.

Honor and Courage

Otterkin are not known for their long lifespans, and it’s not for lack of natural lifespan;
otterkin can live up to 60 years, on par with deerfolk, and some do, but many tend to lose their
life early as a result of inter-clan conflicts. The result of this leads to a race of honor-seeking
individuals that look death in the eye and don’t even blink. Courage and bravery is held in high
esteem in otterkin society; cowards are not well received and are often outcast from all but the
most basic social functions.
While it is not inherently wrong to call an otterkin cantankerous, stubborn, or otherwise
bullheaded in conversation, to say that they are completely unyielding is a false accusation.
Otterkin are raised to never accept another’s point of view unless they can provide sound,
irrefutable evidence that their idea is the most practical or reasonable; this, however, does not
mean that otterkin are incapable of admitting mistakes, as they often do when they realize that
they are clearly in the wrong. With this in mind, otterkin make sound, steadfast companions as
their stubbornness often translates into an unwavering loyalty to their friends.
Individual otterkin are loyal and honorable beings that don’t back down from a
challenge. Their glory-seeking and stubbornness translates into generally courageous
individuals that aren’t afraid to speak their mind, even if they might be wrong. Their refusal to
give up also makes them generally inspiring and individual otterkin generally have a positive,
uplifting attitude when their comrades show signs of fear or hopelessness.

Adventure and Glory

Given their quarrelsome, glory-seeking nature, it is not uncommon for otterkin to seek a
life of adventure. Many take up the sword simply out of boredom with their lives as fishers and
traders, while others might be seeking to prove a point or make good on a bet. It is also possible
that an otterkin might be seeking to redeem themselves after a cowardly deed made them the
village laughing-stock.
