 Preface

The visual analytic report below is prepared by The Urban
Center from raw data made available by NEBE on June 12,
2021. The dataset focuses on candidates running for seats in
all sub-cities of Addis Abeba.
This report attempts to capture a few essential characteristics
of the candidates representing the parties competing in Addis
Abeba. Readers should be aware that the analysis does not
cover the full range of issues for the elections in Addis Abeba,
and certainly not the overall election process in Ethiopia.
The main aim of The Urban Center in publishing this analysis
is to promote a data driven understanding of the 2013 (EC)
Ethiopian elections. More importantly, The Urban Center
would like to promote a culture of producing critically consid-
ered visual outputs during such important national events, as
part of its broader goal of making impactful contributions.

The analysis covers basic statistical facts on the candidates,

including the gender and total number of candidates fielded
by each political party, disaggregated by sub-city and educa-
tional attainment levels. Candidates running for the House of
Peoples Representatives and the Regional Council in Addis
Abeba are analyzed separately.
