Romeo and Juliet (1968)

Personal Perception about Romeo

For the first minute of the film, I hope I can spot the main cast right away
either is Romeo or Juliet. But it’s not really clear who’s being filmed on the
beginning until some characters actually said his name, Romeo. First thing, about
his physical appearance, he’s nothing different from the other blue clothed men,
He may be handsome, but nothing special.

The first time he appeared, I conclude that he’s just a loner. I don’t even
see him join the fight, though seeing the quarrel between them is quite
troublesome. Entering the plot, Romeo was a simple-hearted man who fell in love
at the first sight, cliche. I don’t know his actual age, he might be much older than
Juliet, but he did have such interest to 12-years-old Juliet. Even at that period,
she’s look mature enough, I feel disgusted when I think Romeo might be much
older. However, I then think at least they both in their teen age, so it’s just a cute
puppy love.

But still, Romeo is such a guilty character for me. He’s too vulgar and it’s
very impolite that he suddenly pulled her hand and kissed her. I know, it may
common in Europe but if Juliet actually refused to do it, then it’s a molestation.
Not to mention that Juliet has higher status. Moreover, he’s in the ball party where
he should not be there. He sneaked at his clan’s enemy party. And then, he
sneaking at Juliet’s balcony, peeking at her when she just wore her sleeping attire.
This story seems romantic, but I see Romeo as a criminal. He’s a molester,
trespasser, stalker, and a potential pedophile.

Instead seeing it in romantic way, I think it’s lust. They kissed so

passionately after just several minutes their eyes first met each other. It’s just a
story, but it’s not rational, they falling in love that fast and at the same time. Even
I took about 2 years to finally can tell that I’m in love with my man.

And then, they married right away in such a very young age, didn’t
thinking about the consequences and their future. Just passionate love. A marriage
life is not as simple as that.

In short Romeo is blinded by his love, that he couldn’t think rationally. He

would do everything as long as he can be together with Juliet, even if they had to
keep their relationship in secret, even if it’s against their family rule. And it’s bad.
If he truly loved Juliet, he should not do something that potentially harm his lover
and made her disobey her parent. There must be something else that can be done.
Isn’t there anything to do so both clans would make peace?

However, Romeo not as that bad. In my criteria, he still has a good side,
and he was a gentle man. Unlike the other men on his clan side nor the opposite
side, he’s not so harsh, not so rude. It may hard for him to pull a sword. And he
treated women so gently.

But he’s still stupid for his love. He should live longer and met someone
else if he wasn’t stupid. But it’s a love story after all. I might do the same thing for
my beloved “Romeo”.
