Chapter 1: The Evolving Art of Public Speaking

Questions:
1. Give a short impression of the article.
The article, titled “The Evolving Art of Public Speaking” talks about how the public
speaking evolves and progress through time. It emphasizes that in today’s generation,
almost all members of the society are now given the opportunity to speak unlike before
which only well-educated men could do. Additionally, other than identifying the speech
topic and purpose of which are primordial consideration in crafting a speech; the core
of the public speaking must be the audience. They are the heart or centerpiece in
crafting a speech as they are your listeners. As much as possible, you have to have a
little background on their interests, needs, and other factors for a successful public
speaking.
Even though the art of public speaking is constantly evolving there are still things
that stays as it is, these are the four core ideas which serve as the foundation for public
speaking such as: the audience-centered communication, choosing an excellent
supporting material, incorporating the five arts or division, and encouraging narrative
thinking.
Beyond that, there are also challenges that a public speaker must take into account
especially the cultural awareness, right use of presentation software, and above all the
ethics. As a person who engages in public speaking during my 4-year undergraduate
course, I can say that out of this article there are still points that I have to bear in mind
and continue working on for further improvement and the rest for enhancement.
Because as the art of public speaking evolves through time, so am I.

2. In your personal note, identify your strong and weak points when doing a public
speaking engagement.
Based on my experience before, I can say that my strong points in public speaking
is on building a connection with my audience and in conveying the emotions and
feelings of the speech.
On the other hand, my weak point when I engage with public speaking is my stage
freight. This happens when I am unprepared and presenting it to unknown audience.
There is a tendency that my organization of ideas might be disintegrated. Giving me
chills and nervousness some time. So, for me, that is my weak point that I have to
continue working on for improvement. And I do hope that, this subject would be the
catalyst for my continuing improvement and development not only as a public speaker,
but wholesomely as a person. With that, I can also contribute my knowledge and pass
it on to the upcoming generations.
3. Reflect on your identified weak points and consult a colleague as to show how
will you overcome the latter.
As I consulted and discussed my weak points to my colleague named Mark, he
reiterates that I can overcome those with an adequate preparation. So, first things first,
I have to prepare before engaging on a public speaking. And as I go through my
speech presentation, I have to be mindful of my body language and other non-verbal
cues not to show to the audience that I am indeed nervous. So, I have to be confident
and behave properly as much as possible. Above all, no matter happens, the speech
presentation must go on and I have to go with the flow.
