2” Cast UCA Unit Calculation and notes:

Key assumptions:

 The unit is under tensile stress ie., no Shear Stress is included

 Factor of safety is considered no more than 1.5 and the calculates are made for the design
pressure which is 18bara
 The material properties (both for the bolt and member) are taken as per the design
temperature no more than 60 degrees

Constraints:

 Element connection flange outer diameter (152mm)

 Element ring Segment area (allowable surface area) (>= the standard- 2518.264 mm 2)
 Volume between orifice and element ring (233886.8mm3)
 Flame passage gap (>= 3mm)

Volumetric capacity calculations:

Volume from connection flange to Orifice plate:

Vo = (pi/4)D2h1 + {1/3pi((D/2)2+(d/2)2+((Dd)/4)(h’-h1}+ (pi/4)d2h2

~ 215519.4586 mm3

Gasket Design calculations:

As per the constraints

 OD of gasket = 152mm
 ID of Gasket = 114 mm
 Min Seating (yield)stress of PTFE (y) = 10 Mpa

Working load require:

Calculated m Value of PTFE (m) = seating stress/internal design pressure

= 10/1.8 = 5.5

Min Gasket Width N = (OD-ID)/2 = (152-114)/2 = 19 mm

Effective Gasket Width (b) = 2.5√ ¿ ¿ ) = 7.71 mm (from outer dia)

Gasket load reaction circle (where the load of flanges are concentrated)

G = OD-2b = 152 – 2x7.71 = 136.59 mm (dia)

Load applied as per design hydrostatic pressure:

H = pi G2 P / 4 = (3.14x136.592x1.8)/4 = 26364.698 N

Reaction load to keep joint tight:

Hp = pi(Gx2b)mP = 29760.85 N 65473.87

Total operating Load Wo = H + Hp

= 91838.568 = 92 KN

The following load is the minimum proof load required to get joint sealed.

From the above minimum bolt area required is:

Ab = Wo/Sb

Sb = Allowable proof strength of bolt material = 450 Mpa for SS316

Ab = 91838.568/450 = 204.085 mm2

Root area of one M6 x 1 screw:

Rb = 0.785x(d-1.0825xp)2 = 18.98 mm2

Min number of bolts required:

N = Ab/Rb

= 10.75

As per ASME flange design theory the number of bolts on flange should be a multiple of ‘4’

The closed multiple of 4 after 10 is 12, so we need 12 M6x1 bolts to get a tight joint
