THEME: FAMILIANS, MISSIONARY DISCIPLES GIFTED TO GIVE

REVIST THE CHURCH HISTORY

-Started with the ministry of Jesus but He needs to return to the Father.

-He left a mandate and baptize

Nota Bene – The disciples continued the ministry of Jesus

-33 AD- JESUS died and waited for paraclete tongues of fire and began to speak in tongues (foreign
languages) and nag start na silang lumibot sa iba’t isang parts ng mundo.

3 MINISTRY OR TRADITION OF THE DISCIPLES AND THE CHURCH (THREEFOLD MISSIONS)

TEACH – SERVE – WORSHIP

TEACH- Proclaim the good news.

SERVE- look or tend to my flock
WORSHIP- do this in memory of me.

*People were led to believe and eventually got baptized; they are called BELIEVERS OR FOLLOWERS OF
THE WAY.

Kyron – Px – roman peace

A sense of community was evident though the environment was not friendly to them

QUALITIES OF EARLY CHRISTIANS

1.one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism (EPH. 4:15)

- (important as the Roman Empire) merge all the religions and treat the Roman emperor to
be the supreme god.
2.common vacation (1PT. 2:9)
- priority of the church is to feel Holiness a sense of presence of God
-responding to the word of God.

3.of one and soul (ACTS 4:32)

- no one owns a property but common proprietorship; sell your belongings and give it to the
poor; WELCOMING not stand idle and indifferences
-paul didn’t had a hard time pero needs ng iba so di sila nag hesitate.

4.mystical body (1COR 12:12-27) - sense of genuine concern (empathy)

Sense of community - is evident and very true despite the not so friendly environment that they are apart
of → comparing the church now and the past → the early christian community faced a lot of trials →
“persecution” → nevertheless still the church numbers are increasing na pahirap na pahirap sila i-contain
and monitor → pumasok si paul → si yung king natakot so lumipat siya and yung capital

Eastern- headed by the patriarch; orthodox (native americans)

Western- headed by a pope; roman catholic; rome
and because of that nag thrive yung FAITH COMMUNITY.

The church faced trials and persecuted not only the jewish but also the roman empire.
-kasi na threaten sila sa grown ng Christian community
- PERO AS NAPPRESECUTE SILA LALO SILANG DUMAMI.
SO NUNG DUMAMI SILA NAHIRAPAN NA IMONITOR AND NAGKAROON NG SETTLEMENT AND ORGANIZE.

Paul- spread the word of God sa Roman Empire.

How is the early Church described?

LAIKOS/laity (belonging of) + KLEROS/clergy (a portion or a lot own by God) = P.O.G. (people of God) –
Greek word to refer to the people of God

1. TD (theological distinction)
Edict of Milan - law proclaiming that Christian as the official religion or the empire
- born of an attitude of people in expressing faith.
- Christians were firm
- Christian did a favour to stop persecution of Christian
- Christianity became the legal religion of the roman empire
- Expression the faith became open
- Becoming a member of the church became easy as well
- Bandwagon – nakikisakay lang, nakikisawsaw lang, Gaya Gaya. The conviction of
expression in faith is NOT DEEP than it was before.
- Many became relax in the practice of their faith
- Yung mga naging Christians at this time became lax unlike before na “SALA/FILTERED” and
nagging christians nalang sila “ by name”
- Nabawasan yung religiosity and tumiwalag yung iba sa Christianity and continued a rigid faith
- St. BENDEICT - lived in solitude kasi nagging panget na yung practice ng faith.
- Fall back was .. bc it is so easy for the people to become christian they become so relax in
expressing their faith w/o realizing that they became defiant/lost in the accordance to the
creed (SECULARISM - attach sa mundo)

Two Groups:

✔ Nominal Christian – Christian by name but not in life.

✔ R.o.A (rise of ascetics) – there are people who continued to be discipline in the practice of
faith. Church leaders are coming from ascetics.
ASCETICS- sila yung mga monks or hermits and away nilang ma practice yung ireligiousity.
- ecumenical council → cultural catholicity - the faithful can express their faith in the use
of their culture
- Cause: Prevalence of philosophical dualism – is a Greco Roman Culture or influence. A principle
that distinguishes between spiritual and material. Mas mahalaga ang spiritual things kaysa sa
material things.
Effect:
- C = Holy
- L = Less Holy If Not Wordily.
- This privilege did not help
- Less significant being

Timeline:
Judeo Christian Tradition (our beginning) → issue → faith went all ‘beyond the reach of empire’ → was
challenge by the Graeco Roman

2. SD (social distinction)
- born from the special privileges and perks granted to the people. (exempted sa tax kaya mas
naging well off sila kesa sa ordinary people)
- authorization to wear attire for them only.
- It was prompted by the frequency of the barbaric invasion
- No sense of leader (palestine leader tapos pumunta sa rome so nanghina yung palestine)
- Born due the lack of leadership
- special treatment and kabisera (padre damaso/ padre sibila)

3. ED (educational distinction) - it refers to the level of knowledge

- because of the barbaric invasion yung mga ordinary/ militant soldiers people natuto na
gumamit ng mga espada while yung mga nasa simbahan continued their education.
- Shift of Focus from faith life nagging survival nalang.
- syempre hindi naman sasakupin ng mga barbarians yung mga holy places kasi maddesicrate.
- Western part nagkaroon ng papal community (vatican as an independent state/ country)
the Clergy is (effect)
- Became the Cradle of knowledge (B.C.o.K)
- Authority of faith and doctrines (A.o.F.a.D)
- Tumaas ang tingin sa clergy, bumaba ang tingin sa laity DAHIL NAKAPAGARAL SILA.
