CE301 -Structural Analysis III

Duration: 2 Hours

June 2015

,-. Instructions to Candidates:

• Write your SLUT Student Enrolment Number clearly on answer scripts.
• This examination paper has three printed pages including this cover page and it
contains two questions. Each question carries 30 marks for a total of 60 for the end
of semester examination.
• Answer all the parts in question/s.
• At the end of the examination hand over the answer scripts to an invigilator.
• All the scratch work will be collected separately at the end of the examination.
1) 2-D Frame shown in the figure 1 below is made from a material having a Young's modulus
of E=21 0 GPa. The uniform cross section of the frame has A=2x1 Q-2 m2 and l=2x1 Q-4 m4
respectively. Using two frame elements to model the structure, determine the
displacements and the rotation at the point of application of the loads.

2) Figure 2 shows a portal frame which is pinned to its foundation and which c~uries vertical
and horozontalloads as shown. If the relative values of the plastic moments of resistance
are those indicated in the figure, then determine;
i) Ultimate failure loads in all possible beam mechanisms,
ii) Ultimate failure load in sway mechanism,
iii) Ultimate failure loads in all possible combined sway and beam mechanisms,
iv) By considering the above mechanisms, plastic collapse load Wu in terms of the
plastic moment parameter Mp.
v) Foundation reactions at collapse.
