Halitosis, or bad breath, is a common
problem in 80% of the dogs 2 years old or
more. It usually comes associated with other
mouth diseases (like plaque and tartar), that
means if you notice bad breath on your dog,
you will probably find more trouble inside its
mouth.
How does the problem start?
Plaque is a soft, off-white and easily
removable film that is constantly coating the
teeth and contains millions of bacteria. Within
48-72 hours, calcium salts are deposited in this
plaque film, producing a crust. This crust is
called tartar, a hard yellow-brown layer that
cannot be easily wiped or brushed off. Tartar

the gum line, it will start a periodontal disease.
Uncontrolled periodontal disease can cause
discomfort, thickening of the gums, receding
gums, infection, weakening of the teeth’s
ligaments and eventual loss of the tooth.
