5.1 CONDITIONS FOR RIGID-BODY
EQUILIBRIUM
 If this resultant force and couple moment are both
equal to zero, then the body is said to be in
equilibrium . Mathematically, the equilibrium of a
body is expressed as

5.2 FREE-BODY DIAGRAMS

Support Reactions:

 If a support prevents the translation of a

body in a given direction, then a force is
developed on the body in that direction.

 If rotation is prevented, a couple moment is

exerted on the body. 3

5.3 EQUATIONS OF EQUILIBRIUM

18
 Alternative Sets of Equilibrium
Equations (1)

 When using these equations it is required

that a line passing through points A and B 19
is not parallel to the y axis.
 Alternative Sets of Equilibrium
Equations (2)

 Here it is necessary that points A, B , and C

do not lie on the same line. 20
