0 Video Design and Development

Lesson Introduction

In previous lesson, you have learned about digital video technologies and
associated standards. During this week student will learn to apply the digital video
technologies learned when editing video. The learner will be able to apply
appropriate video editing and production techniques. The learner will be able to
describe video editing and post production in detail. The skills presented in this
lesson is important for professional video production industry. Further, the
learners will be able to produce quality video clips with effective design.

Learning Outcomes:
After completion of this lesson, the learner will be able to apply video
editing software to create digital video with necessary effects.
§ Describe non-linear editing process

12.1 Video Editing
Generally, it’s a myth that video editing is a process of cutting out the unwanted
parts and parts doesn’t look good such as shaky shots, out of focus scenes and
add transformations. But actually, video editing is more than well prepared
stitching of video sceneries or shots according to the given storyboard with
necessary effects and adjustments where it included the flow and presentation of
whole message which is intended to deliver to the audience.

Traditionally, video editing was done in a linear fashion, where the video was cut
into long strips divided by scene joined or taped back together to create a video
tape in logical sequence. This method was time-consuming, tedious and highly
specialized work. In videotapes, it cannot be physically cut into pieces to be
spliced together to create a new order. Therefore, the editor must dub or record
each desired video clip to a master tape. There are some disadvantages in this
method. It is not possible to insert or delete scenes from the master tape without
re-copying all the subsequent scenes. Each piece of video clip must be laid down
in real time, where it highly impossible to rewind to make a change without re-
editing everything. Time of reedited video should match with the previous or
higher length. There are some advantages of linear editing such as, it is simple
and inexpensive. Learning linear editing skills increases understanding.

Modern day, video editing is done as non-linear editing with the help of digital
multimedia computer technology.

12.1.1. Non-Linear Editing

Non-linear editing is taking the advantage of random access read/write memory
and it’s a non-destructive editing process. Linear editing was originally done with
analogue video tapes. Non-linear video editing is achieved by loading the video
material into a computer from analogue or digital tape where ultimate source is
in digital form. The editing process can create a new video by storing all the
commands entered by the person who edit it. This method facilitates editing by
cut, copy and paste scenes in any order and make any changes desired. At the
completion of the editing process the computer can then compile a production
into desired delivery format.
There are various nonlinear editing (NLE) software such as Adobe’s Premiere,
Apple’s Final Cut, and Avid’s Media Composer, type of professional video editors.
These are feature-packed and expensive packages designed to work on High
Performance Computer systems. As an alternative Microsoft’s Windows Live
Movie Maker or Apple’s iMovie for Macs that provides free with the operating
system.
