Fluids and Lubricating Greases 1 Introduction

1 Introduction

1.1 Safety First

WARNING
Failure to Observe Safety Instructions
Can cause severe injury or death
u Read the Safety Manual before operating, doing maintenance, service, or repairs on
the machine.
u Know where the safety signs are on the equipment and understand their meanings.
u Obey all safety signs and warning statements.

All fluids and greases are essential parts of preventive maintenance. It is important to obey
the instruction in the machine-specific Operation and Maintenance manuals. A regular ser-
vice program must be designed depending on average operating conditions.
• Specific brand and type in this manual is not applicable to all situations, due to regional
availability, operating conditions, and continual development of improved products.
• Select correct quality and viscosity grade of fluids and greases to improve the effi-
ciency and extend the service life of components.
• Use fluids and greases that meet or exceed the requirement specifications.
• Never mix fluids and greases of a different type or grade.
• Discard used fluids and greases in accordance with local environmental regulations.
• Contact original equipment manufacturer (OEM) or refer to the OEM manuals for more
information, if necessary.
• Contact local Epiroc, if any doubt.

1.2 The Purpose of this Manual

The Fluids and Lubricating Greases manual is intended to:
• Provide information on the machine-specific fluid and grease types used in Epiroc
Nanjing factory.
• Provide information on the specification and standard of the fluids and greases.
This manual does not replace the necessary training that is required for the handling of the
machine and its related equipment.

1.3 Target Group

The information in this publication is intended for everyone involved in the application, op-
eration, and maintenance of the machine and related equipment. All readers are expected
to possess basic competence regarding mining methods, construction methods, and the
machines used for construction and mining operation.

2.1 Hydraulic Oil

The quality of hydraulic oil is important to the satisfactory performance of any hydraulic
system. The oil serves as the power transmission medium, system coolant, and lubricant.
Selection of the proper oil is essential to extend machine life and proper system perfor-
mance.

! NOTE: Use applicable hydraulic oil in accordance with the actual ambient temperature.

NOTE: Surplus oil must be disposed of in an environment-friendly manner as pre-

! scribed by local authorities.

2.2 Diesel Fuel

The quality of the diesel fuel is an important factor for the performance, the life time, and
the emission levels of the diesel engine.

NOTE: Only use diesel fuel that meets the requirements in the engine operation and
! maintenance manual. Contact OEM for up to date recommendations.

NOTE: Do not mix gasoline, alcohol, or gasohol with diesel fuel. This mixture can
! cause an explosion.

NOTE: Fuel which is stored must not have contact with the air, but must be stored in a
! closed vessel. The vessel must be approved for its purpose and must be clean.
