Problem 1 (25 points)

Air (k = 1.4 and R = 287 J/kg.K) flows from a tank through a nozzle into the standard
atmosphere, as shown in the figure. A normal shock stands at the exit of the nozzle. Take
at sea-level: P = 101.3 kPa and T = 288 K.
a) Estimate the pressure in the tank.
b) Estimate the mass flow.

Problem 2 (45 points)

Air (k = 1.4 and R = 287 J/kg.K) flows at Ma∞ = 2.5 and p∞ = 100 kPa past a half-wedge
airfoil whose angles are 4° and chord length is C = 2m, as in the figure, the angle of attack
is α = 6°.
a) Using the shock-expansion theory, compute the pressure P1 below the airfoil and the
pressures P2 and P3 above it.
b) Deduce the drag and lift coefficients of the airfoil using the shock-expansion theory.

α = 6°

Ma∞ = 2.5

P ∞ = 100 kPa

Problem 3 (25 points)

Air (k = 1.4 and R = 287 J/Kg.K) enters a duct subsonically at section (1) at 1.2 kg/s as
shown in the figure. When 650 kW of heat is added, the flow chokes at the exit at P2 = 95
kPa and T2 = 700 K. Assuming frictionless heat addition, estimate:
a) The velocity at section (1).
b) The stagnation pressure at section (1).
