PEMDAS Worksheet

The document provides instructions on the order of operations, known as PEMDAS, for solving mathematical expressions with multiple operations. It explains that parentheses, exponents, multiplication/division (from left to right), and addition/subtraction (from left to right) should be performed in that order to obtain the correct answer. Examples are given to demonstrate applying PEMDAS. Students are assigned homework problems applying these rules and asked to write out the worked solutions.

Chapter one: Integers

Order of Operations

For working out a problem that has more than one operation, we need to do these
operations in order to get the correct answer. Use this rule to help you in calculating:

Example 1): Do NOW:
Work out this problem in order.
2 × 4 + 42 + 48 ÷ (10 − 4) − 1 a) 9 ÷ 3 + 6 × 23
PEMDAS
= 2 × 4 + 42 + 48 ÷ 64 − 1
= 2 × 4 + 16 + 48 ÷ 64 − 1
= 8 + 16 + 48 ÷ 64 − 1
= 8 + 16 + 8 − 1
= 24 + 8 − 1
= 32 − 1 = 31 # b) 50 − (16 ÷ 22 ) + 3

(Hint = 42 = 4 × 4 = 16)

Do at HOME
1. 3 + 5 × 7
2. (1 + 3) × (8 − 4)
3. 6 − 6 + (7 − 0) − 7
4. 4 − 3 + (5 − 1) − 3
5. 3 + 9 × 8 − 62 c) 2 × 3 − (4 − 2) + 32 ÷ 3
6. 24/6 × 2 × 2/4
7. 2 + 3 × (4 + (6 × 3 − 8)) × 2

[HW] Work out the rest of problems at home then write them in your notebook.

Good luck, By T. Jalal A.
