BOOK REVIEW

What is a book review?

A book review is when you are telling people about a book. You have to say
what you liked about the book. You also have to tell how the reader will benefit
from reading this book. A book review is an objective summary of the main
ideas and arguments that the book's author has presented.

Fiction / Non-fiction:

Since story is king in the world of fiction, it probably won’t come as any surprise
to learn that a book review for a novel will concentrate on how well the story
was told.
Nonfiction books are generally written to inform readers about a certain topic.
As such, the focus of a nonfiction book review will be on the clarity and
effectiveness of this communication.

What should be included in a book review?

Four things should be kept in mind while writing a book review. There are four
stages of writing a book review. They are: introducing the book, outlining its
contents, highlighting parts of the book by selecting particular chapters or
themes, and giving a detailed evaluation.

Conclusion:

The conclusion to your book review is the last thing your audience will read so
you want to make sure it leaves them with a lasting impression. A reader has
most likely come to your review to decide whether they will or won’t read the
book, so if you want them to read the book, make it clear.

It’s an exciting time to be a book reviewer. Like all works of art, no two book
reviews will be identical. So remember….

1. A review will offer a concise plot summary of the book.

2. A book review will offer an evaluation of the work.
3. A book review will offer a recommendation for the audience.

Title: Othello
Author: William Shakespeare
Genre: Tragedy (Play)

Othello is without a doubt one of the greatest tragedies ever written. It is one of
Shakespeare's later plays and, in my opinion, one of his best. Although originally
based on a short story, Shakespeare did really adapt it and make it his own.

Othello is a general in the service of Venice. Iago is Othello's friend, but then
Othello promotes Michael Cassio to the position of personal lieutenant and Iago is
incredibly jealous. Iago begins an evil and malicious campaign against the hero.
Othello elopes with Desdemona but Iago starts to plot against them. Othello
becomes very suspicious of Desdemona. He confides in Iago that he plans to
poison Desdemona. Plots and murders ensue and Othello returns to the castle to
kill his innocent wife, eventually smothering her to death. Emilia tells Othello the
truth about the scheming Iago. Othello wounds Iago, then kills himself. Iago kills
Emilia.

I like that Othello is brave and quite competent, even if towards the end his
decisions aren't quite so rational and he acts on impulse. It is a great example of a
text that was written hundreds of years ago, but with themes that can be applied
to modern day situations.

It is a difficult read and takes a long time to get through so I would only
recommend it to people who like classics and have a lot of patience!
I really like classics and enjoy Shakespearean texts so I thoroughly enjoyed this
book and would award it five stars.
