Chapter 1
Introduction
Overview
The RCP-ABAe remote control panels are the latest in a long line of control
panel options for Harris routing switchers. RCP-ABAe remote control panels
are designed for use with Harris routing switchers, and combine the ease of
operation of a button-per-crosspoint control panel, with the flexibility of
programmability.
This chapter contains the following topics:
• “Product Description” on page 2
• “Control Panel Sizes” on page 2
• “Main Features” on page 6
• “Configuration Tools” on page 7
Chapter 1: Introduction
Product Description
The RCP-ABAe control panels are router control panels designed for use with
Harris routing switchers. The panels include easy-to-read alphanumeric
displays, and can be easily programmed using the RouterMapper, the
Microsoft® Windows®1-based configuration utility editor supplied with the
control panel.
For maximum flexibility, the panel can be operated in Logical Control mode. In
Logical Control mode, a database is first defined to describe the overall routing
switcher (i.e., available sources, destinations and levels). From that database,
specific sources and destinations are selected and downloaded to each panel.
Sources and destinations are identified and selected on the panel via
operator-defined categories and indexes (e.g., CAM 1, MON 2, etc.), which
allows you to quickly and easily locate desired sources and destinations.
Operation of the function keys can also be configured via RouterMapper, and
key cap inserts for each programmed key can be printed after the panel is
configured.
For applications where the use of logical source and destination names is not
required, RCP-ABAe panel can be operated in Physical Control mode. In
Physical Control mode the panel will operate using the physical input and
output numbers instead of logical names (categories and indexes). Physical
Control mode requires no additional programming.

• Holds the product rigid within the packaging
• Leaves at least two inches of space between the product and the container
Chapter 2: Installation
Serial Connection
One of the many powerful features of a Harris router control system is its ability
to use a serial port to access an entire system. The serial port, in effect, is the
control gateway to the entire routing system. The serial port allows external
control of the RCP-ABAe by a computer, user, or automation system via a serial
connection using RS-232 or RS-422. The port is configured by DIP switches or
from the terminal interface (see “Configuring via Terminal Operations,” which
starts on page 25).
Table 2-1 on page 15 shows the connector pin assignments for a RS-232 cable
connection. Table 2-2 on page 15 shows the connector pin assignments for an
RS-422 cable connection.
Chapter 2: Installation
Ethernet Connection
The Ethernet connection provides high-speed links for configuration, control,
and monitoring of the complete routing system. The Ethernet connection uses
10Base-T wiring. Figure on page 16 shows the RJ-45 jack pinout information
for 10Base-T Ethernet communication.
X-Y Port
The X-Y control bus is a high speed serial interface by which Harris routers and
control panels are interconnected via standard 75Ω video coax cable. The ends
of the X-Y bus must be terminated using standard 75Ω video terminators.
The RCP-ABAe features one looped-through port (two BNC connectors). If
either of the BNCs is used, the other associated X-Y port connection must
be terminated with a 75Ω BNC terminator or connected to another device’s
X-Y port. It is not necessary to terminate either of the BNCs if neither is used.
DIP Switches
The rear panel has three banks of 8-pole DIP switches that are accessible from
the rear of the RCP-ABAe frame. These DIP switches can be set in two different
operating modes: DIP switch mode and Program mode. See page 16 for more
information about configuring the DIP switches for the RCP-ABAe.
Chapter 2: Installation
Installing Panels
Siting Requirements
Ensuring Adequate Rack Space
The RCP-ABAe frame is designed for mounting into a standard width 19-in.
(48.3-cm) rack. Frames are secured to the rack with standard front-mounting
ears built into the chassis. Make sure to provide adequate space behind the
mounting ears, and appropriate clearance for the connecting cables at the rear of
the frame.
Mounting Requirements
Tools You’ll Need
The following tools and equipment are recommended for installation of
Note RCP-ABAe control panels:
When power is applied to the • One standard 19-in. (0.4-m) rack
RCP-ABAe control panel, it
starts up automatically.
• One medium Phillips screwdriver
• Four 10-32 Phillips-head rack mount screws
Chapter 2: Installation
Mounting Requirements
The RCP-ABAe frame can be mounted in a standard width 19-in. (48.3 cm)
rack using four 10-32 Phillips-head mounting screws. The back of the frame
does not need to be supported.
• The 1RU panel requires one unit of rack space, that is, 1¾ in. (44 mm) of
standard rack space. The depth from the mounting surface is 5¼ in. (13.3
cm).
• The 2RU panel requires two units of rack space, that is, 3½ in. (88 mm) of
standard rack space. The depth from the mounting surface is 5¼ in. (13.3
cm).
The frame can be mounted in either the front or the rear of the rack to allow for
more efficient use of your equipment housing space. The rack ears can be
attached to the frame in either direction and can be adjusted to achieve a
desirable depth within the rack, thereby allowing you flexible mounting options.
RCP-ABAe control panels are installed in the control line.
• The maximum allowable distance for each segment of the X-Y coaxial
cable run is 2,000 ft (609 m).
• The maximum length for each RS-232 cable segment is 50 ft (15 m).
• The maximum length for each RS-422 cable segment is 2,000 ft (609 m).
Installation Procedures
RCP-ABAe control panels can be installed anywhere within a routing system.
General installation procedures are outlined below.
1. Mount the frame in an rack that provides power and cooling facilities. The
frame is designed for mounting in a standard equipment rack.
2. Align the frame so that all holes in the mounting ears match up with those in
the rack. (Ears can be adjusted to set the desired depth of the panel within
the rack.)
3. Secure the frame to the rack with the rack screws and washers.
4. Connect the control device(s) to the appropriate port (X-Y, serial, Ethernet)
on the frame’s rear panel.
5. If the RCP-ABAe is to be used in a multiple frame system, connect the
additional frames using the appropriate scheme (X-Y, Ethernet, etc.).
6. If the RCP-ABAe is at the end of the X-Y bus, terminate the other X-Y
connector with a coaxial 75Ω termination.
7. Connect the power supply line cord to the RCP-p panel.
Chapter 2: Installation
8. Between the control panel’s top and bottom function keys you will find the
key brightness adjustment. This adjustment controls the light intensity of all
of the control panel keys. To adjust the key light intensity, use a small
flat-head screwdriver to turn the brightness screw clockwise (brighter) or
counter-clockwise (dimmer).

Overview
RCP-ABA1EXYp (Figure 1-5 on page 5) panels provide three source selection
windows. RCP-ABA1ESBp (Figure 1-1 on page 3), RCP-ABA2ESBp
(Figure 1-2 on page 3), RCP-ABA2EMBp (Figure 1-4 on page 4), and
RCP-ABA2EXYp (Figure 1-6 on page 5) panels provide four source selection
windows. Each window corresponds to a level or group of associated levels.
The RouterMapper configuration utility allows you to set which levels are
assigned to each of the windows.
The Level Select keys allow you to specify the levels on which they are about to
select sources. If a level key is lit, then that level is selected and source selection
will appear in that level.
The RCP-ABA1ESBp and RCP-ABA2ESBp single bus control panels control
and display the status of one router destination. The controlled destination is
assigned to the control panel when it is initially configured and cannot be
changed from the front of the control panel. The displays on the panel show the
sources connected to the destination on each of four levels. Sources may be
switched on all four levels simultaneously (AFV switching), or they may be
switched independently (breakaway switching). Procedures for selecting
sources are covered in detail in the sections that follow.
The RCP-ABA1EMBp and RCP-ABA2EMBp multibus control panels
simultaneously provide control and status of four destinations. A specific
destination is assigned to each display when the panel is initially configured.
This destination cannot be changed from the front of the control panel. The
source connected to each destination is displayed in the control display, and can
be changed using the procedures outlined in the following sections. Sources will
be switched on all levels simultaneously (AFV switching).
The RCP-ABA1EXYp and RCP-ABA2EXYp control panels include pushbutton
keys, displays, and a scroll knob. Both sources and destinations are selected on
the front of the control panel, while the destination and sources may be
monitored in the display screens. Sources may be switched on all levels
simultaneously (AFV switching), or independently (breakaway switching).
These control panels may be operated in Logical Control mode (see page 38) or
Physical Control mode (see page 75).

When a panel is operated in logical control mode, selection keys can be used to
select devices in two ways:
• Category + index (see “Category + Index Operation” on page 46 for more
information)
• Favorite key (see “Favorite Key Operation” on page 54for more
information)
When a panel is configured, each of the selection keys is assigned two pieces of
information:
• A name, which appears on the top row of the key’s legend. The name
portion can either be a category name VTR, CAM, SAT, etc.) or it can be
the full name of a favorite device (REC VTR, CAM 6, ON AIR 1.).
Pressing a key once selects the name (e.g., category or favorite device).
• An index character, which appears on the bottom row of the key’s legend.
Pressing the next key selects the index character. Indexes continue to build
until the TAKE or CLEAR keys are pressed.
When a selection key is assigned to a favorite device, it is called a favorite key.
See “Favorite Key Operation” on page 54 for more information.

Chop Operation
All RCP-ABAe panels support chop operations. In chop operation mode, you
can alternately switch the controlled destination (on all applicable levels)
between two sources, in a repetitive manner. This operation is particularly
useful in applications such as signal timing and camera matching.
A “chopping” destination that is locked may not be switched or altered by other
users. The destination must be unlocked to allow takes or changes to the “chop”
state. (See page 60 for more information about locking and unlocking
destinations.)

Destination Unlocking
If the destination was locked from this control panel, simply press the LOCK
key again to unlock the destination. The light will turn off and the destination
will become available to everyone in the system.
Paging
RCP-ABA1ESBp, RCP-ABA2ESBp, RCP-ABA1EXYp, and
RCP-ABA2EXYp control panels support paging operations. RCP-ABA1EMBp
and RCP-ABA2EMBp control panels do not support paging operations.
Paging can be programmed into two or more keys to allow “pages” of the
sources on all levels to be displayed one at a time. The page keys are necessary
because only a limited number of sources connected to a particular destination
can be displayed at a time. Therefore, those sources on the other levels are not
displayed unless they can be viewed using the page keys. Refer to your
RouterMapper configuration utility manual for more detailed information on
how to perform this function.
Preset/Take Operation
All RCP-ABAe panels support preset/take operations. An RCP-ABAe control
panel is generally configured to operate in Preset/Take mode. In this mode, a
source is selected by first being “preset” (displayed but not yet selected), and it
remains “preset” until you either press the TAKE key to execute the switch or
press the CLEAR ALL key to abort the switch.
The control panel includes a pair of LED indicators which display either
STATUS or PRESET. If the STATUS LED is lit, then the displays are showing
the current router status. Pressing TAKE at this point would have no effect on
signal routing. If the PRESET LED is lit, then the displays are showing a
PRESET or “ready to be executed” source selection. Pressing TAKE at this
point will execute all preset sources.
When performing a breakaway source selection, it is possible to preset different
sources on different levels before pressing the TAKE key, allowing a split
switch (e.g., CAM 1 on Video, VTR 2 on Audio 1 and VTR 4 on Audio 2) to be
simultaneously executed on all levels using a single TAKE operation.

RCP-ABA1EXYp and RCP-ABA2EXYp control panels support Select
Destination mode. RCP-ABA1ESBp, RCP-ABA2ESBp, RCP-ABA1EMBp,
and RCP-ABA2EMBp control panels do not support Select Destination mode.
The currently selected destination is displayed in the control panel’s top left
display. Sources currently connected to that destination will be displayed in the
remaining displays. Note that only three or four of the possible eight switching
levels can be viewed in the four source selection screens.
To change the currently selected destination, the panel must first be placed in
select destination mode. This can be accomplished by pressing the SELECT
DEST key located below the knob or by pressing the knob itself. In either case
the panel will enter Select Destination mode. When in Select Destination mode
the SELECT DEST key will be lit.

Compliances
Overview
Carefully observe the safety alert symbols below for dangers, warnings, and
cautions. They alert installers and operators of possible dangers or important
information contained in this manual.
Keep in mind, though, that warnings alone do not eliminate hazards, nor are
they a substitute for safe operating techniques and proper accident prevention
measures.
Any user-serviceable components (such as fuses or batteries) are only
replaceable by those components listed in the manual.
IMPORTANT! Only qualified personnel should perform service procedures.
CAUTION
Statements identifying conditions or practices that can
result in damage to the equipment or other property.
