For the experiment describedbelow, let x determine a randomvariable, and use your knowledge of probability to prepare a probability
distribution.
The sums that appear when two fairfour-sided dice(tetrahedrons) with sides 10, 20, 30, and 40 are tossed
A probability distribution represents the probabilities of all possible values of a random variable. In thiscase, the random variable is the sum of
the two dice. The steps below describe how to make a table of a probability distribution.
Since the random variable represents the sums of the values on the twodice, create a table with all Second Die
possible rolls for each die and use it to determine all possible sums. One possible table is shown to 10 20 30 40
theright, where sums of two results are placed in the cell in the row of the first die result and the column 10
of the second die result. First 20
Die 30
40
Find the sum when a 10 is rolled on the first die and a 10 is rolled on the second die.
10 + 10 = 20
The sum of 20 is placed in the appropriate cell of the table as shown. Second Die
10 20 30 40

First 20
Die 30
40
Find the remaining sums and fill in the remaining cells. Second Die

10 20 30 40 50
First 20 30 40 50 60
Die 30 40 50 60 70
40 50 60 70 80
Now construct a table to count the number of times each different sum appears as a result.
The formula below shows how to find the probability of an eventA, assuming equally likely outcomes.
number of ways A can occur
P(A) =
total number of possible outcomes
The total number of possible outcomes is 16. Second Die

First 20 30 40 50 60
Die 30 40 50 60 70

Use the probability formula given previously to construct a probability distribution for the sums.
