A company sells regular hamburgers as well as a larger burger. Either type can includecheese, relish, lettuce, tomato, mustard, or ketchup.
a. How many different hamburgers can be ordered with exactly 6 extras?
b. How many different regular hamburgers can be made that use exactly 6 of theextras?
c. How many different regular hamburgers can be ordered with at least 5 extras?

Permutations are arrangement ofelements, so order of the elements matters and elements cannot be listed more than once in the
arrangement. Combinations aresubsets, so the order of the elements does not matter and elements cannot be listed more than once.

The order in which the items are chosen is not important. Therefore, use combinations.

Use the formula for combinations of n items taken r at a time.

n!
C(n,r) =
(n − r)!r!

a. There are 2 sizes of hamburgers and 6 different extras and all 6 of the extras can be used for making one hamburger. Therefore, n is 6 and
r is 6 in the formula for the number of different combinations.

Therefore, the number of different hamburgers that can be made as described is the number of different combinations of extras multiplied
by2, the number of ways 1 hamburger can be chosen from the 2 sizes. Solve for the number of different burgers.

6!
N=2•
(6 − 6)! • 6!
=2

b. There are 6 different extras and all 6 of them can be used for making one regular hamburger. Therefore, n is 6 and r is 6 in the formula for
the number of different combinations. .

To find the number of different regular hamburgers N that can be made using any 6 of theextras, use the formula for combinations.

6!
N=
(6 − 6)! • 6!
=1

c. The number of different regular hamburgers that can be made with at least 5 extras is found by computing the number of ways 6 extras can
be used and adding the number of ways 5 extras can be used.

Compute the combinations.

C(6,6) = 1
C(6,5) = 6

Add these values to find how many different regular burgers can be made with at least 5 extras.

6+1=7
