Theme: International Conflicts

United Nations Security Committee

Since the onset of the Arab Spring, Morocco has experienced protests about a
diverse range of economic, political, and social issues. Moreover, there have been rising
levels of unrest in Western Sahara, which is increasingly being seen as a potential threat
to regional security.

In general, we can mention some of the conflicts that the country has been going
through:

- Dispute of the Western Sahara between Algeria and Marroco; since August
2021, Algeria cut off ga shipments that previously ran through Marroco to
Spain, and accused the country of killing Algerian citizens, which is not true.
- Morocco and Algeria same interest in Europe, which increased tensions and the
level of migration across the Mediterranean; many important external partners
from Europe have ties to both countries and have an interest in dampening rather
than fueling tensions. The members of the EU are trying to reduce tensions
between Morocco and Algeria, but to do this, they need to maintain a balanced
position in their relations with both countries.

That’s why Morocco, alongside the EU, have been pressuring Spain to accept
their deal to endorse Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara, which includes
sending those immigrants to Spain. However, the country has been truly reluctant
and stubborn in this case, refusing to accept the deal and turning away from the
problem that has been happening for decades in the North of Africa.
