INTRODUCTION:
Autoclaved erated currete (AAC).also known as autoclaved
cellular concrete (AAC). autoclaved lightweight concrete (ALC).
autcxlaved concrete, cellular concrete. porous com-rete. is a
lightweight. precast. Foam concrete building material invented in the
mid- 1920s that simultaneously rxovi&s structure. insulation. and fire-
and mouldresistance. AAC products include blocks. wall panels. floor
and roof panels and lintels.
AAC was perfected in the mid- 1920s by the Swedish architect
and inventor Dr. Johan Axel Eriksson. working with Professor Henrik
Kreugerat the Royal Institute of Technology. It went into prtxluction in
Swe&n in 1929 in a factory in Hallabrottet and quickly became very
mular.
AAC is a highly thermally insulating ccmcrete-based material
used for both internal and external construction. Besides AACs
insulating capability. one of its advantages in construction is its quick
and easy installation. t*Cause the material can be routed or cut to size
site using standard cartxm steel ix»wer
AAC is well suited for urban areas with high rise buildings and
those with high temvrrature variations. Due to its lower density. high
rise buildings constructed using AAC require less steel and concrete
structual The requirement of mortar for laying of AAC blocks is
reduced due to the lower ofjoints. Similarly, the material required for
rendering is also lower due to tir dinwnsional accuracy of AAC. The
increased thermal efficiency of AAC makes it suitable for use in areas
with extreme temperatures, as it eliminates the Iked for separate
materials f« construction and insulation, leading to faster construction
and cost savings.

OBJECr1VE:
l. To construct economical buildings (cost comparision) by
replacing clay bricks by AAC blocks.
2. To make pr«üctive use of recycled industrial waste (fly ash).
3. To cast standard ACC blocks in the la&yatory and conduct
various tests to check the strength and capacity of blocks.

4. To conduct experimentation nukiified AAC blocks by adding

materials such as paidy husk, quarry dust, M-sand and s14k:r
plastisizer to increase the efficiency of AAC blocks.

METHODOLOGY:
Materials required:
Portland cenænt
2- Lime
3. Aluminum powder
4. Sand
5. Fly ash
6. M-sand
7. Super plastizer.
8. Casting nu»lds and equipnrnt.

Preparation of AAC blocks or paneb.•

AAC blocks are from B).rtland cement. silica rich material like
fly ash or sand, lime, water and aluminum powder as an air entraining
agent. The materials are first mixed into slurry and then poured into
large molds where the air entraining agent reacts with the alkalis in the
cement and lime to produce millicms of small hydrogen gas bubbles.

The mix expands and rises considerably more than its initial volume
under suitable conditions. The hydrogen evaporates and •cake' sets up
and hardems into a stable clCBed cell matrix which can then be
precisely wire-cut into blocks or panels. TIE green aerated concrete is
then steam cured in a pressurized autoclave for ab€RJt 12-14 hours
where upon it undergoes a second chemical reaction and transforms into
mirrral Totrrmorite or calcium silicate.
After casting and required curing various tests are Frformed on
the blocks and the result is noted.

Environmental impacts: AAC blocks

have lower embodied energy per
square metre which is not available in
other concrete alternatives. As a result,
impact of greenhouse gas emission is
considerably less on the AAC Blocks. At
the same time, AAC has much higher
insulation value, which results in the
reduced heating and cooling energy
consumption. AAC has some significant
environmental advantages over
conventional construction materials,
which ensures their longevity and
insulation capacity. What's more
important is that total energy
consumption for producing ACC is
much lesser than what it takes to
produce other building material. And,
it, reduces 30% of environmental waste
when it is used. Considering its
environmental impacts, autoclaved
aerated concrete is a better choice for
the building as well as environment.

Non-toxicity and breathability: Being

aerated, the nature of the AAC blocks

facilitates breathability and there is no
toxic substance present in the final
product. As a result, AAC blocks are
ideal material for homes for the
chemically sensitive.

The Prime Takeaway

With AAC blocks in place, building a
beautiful house is never a big deal. In
fact, using AAC blocks can keep your
house well protected from weather
conditions while providing
sustainability from all aspects.

KONARK are considered highly

sustainable as a building material.
Here's why.
Structural capability: The compressive
strength of AAC is very good. Although
it is one-fifth of the density of the
normal concrete, AAC blocks come
with double bearing strength and load-
bearing capability. Again it is way
lighter than the traditional bricks,
therefore, easier and cheaper to
transport. Usage of AAC blocks
significantly reduces overall dead load
of a building, thereby allowing
construction of taller buildings at an
ease. Being extremely lightweight, it
also reduces the mass of a structure,
which decreases the impact of an
earthquake on a building.
Fire and pest resistance: Another
important aspect that makes
autoclaved aerated concrete blocks a
sustainable material is its exceptional
resistance to fire and vermin. It's
inorganic, incombustible and does not
actually explode in any conditions. No
doubt, these are quite apt for the fire-
rated applications. Even AAC blocks
also come with fire ratings depending
on the thickness of the blocks or
panels, which can withstand fire up to
6 hours of direct exposure. Due to its

not damaged by termites and other
pests. Simultaneously, it does not
attract rodents or other pests.
