Question 1
A 10 cm inner diameter polyurethane pipe with 2.5 cm wall thickness is used to
transport steam at 120°C. The allowable maximum temperature on the outer surface
of this pipe is 60°C. The heat transfer coefficient on the inner surface of this pipe is
between 650 W/m2K and 1200 W/m2K. The surrounding air temperature is between
30°C and 40°C. The heat transfer coefficient on the outer surface of pipe is 80 W/m2K.
Determine whether this configuration complied or not to the maximum temperature
requirement (≤60°C) on the outer surface of the pipe.

Question 2
The thickness of a 40m2 wall is 0.15m with a thermal conductivity of 1.2W/mK. The
temperature of the surface at x=0m is 120oC while the surface at x=0.15m is 30oC. By
assuming the heat conduction is one-dimensional, steady state and no volumetric heat
generation, calculate the heat transfer through the wall.
You must start with the general heat conduction equation:
𝜕 𝜕𝑇 𝜕 𝜕𝑇 𝜕 𝜕𝑇 𝜕𝑇
(𝑘 ) + (𝑘 ) + (𝑘 ) + 𝑔̇ = 𝜌𝑐
𝜕𝑥 𝜕𝑥 𝜕𝑦 𝜕𝑦 𝜕𝑧 𝜕𝑧 𝜕𝑡
