INSTRUCTIONS
1. To receive credit for a problem, you must show all the working. Answers without working will be
given ZERO credit.
2. The use of cell phones or any other sources of communication are strictly prohibited during
examinations. Doing so is considered cheating.
3. Write your name and Reg. no. clearly on the answer sheet.
4. There is no credit for the assumptions, schematics, governing equations and
units. However, marks will be deducted for not writing them appropriately.

ME-423 Introduction to CFD Part-2 Final Exam – Fall, 2021
Q2. Solve Following system of equation for variable x, using (a) Jacobi Method (b) Gauss Sidel Method.
Perform at least 4 iterations for each method and compare the values of both methods.
(CLO-1, PLO-2, C-3) - 6 Marks
Q3. Heat transfer (1-D) across a cylindrical fin shown is figure below, is governed by equation following
equation.
The base temperature (TB) is 100°C and end of fin is insulated (zero heat flux). The ambient temperature
surrounding the fin is 25°C. Length of rod 1m. Value of hP/kA = 25/m2. Analyze the fin using finite Volume
method to discretize the equation and develop the matrices for the solution of Temperature distribution.
(CLO-1, PLO-2, C-3) - 06 Marks
(Note: Use a minimum of 5 nodes for analysis)

Q4. Analyze a steady state fluid flow (open channel flow) over an inclined surface ( θ=30° ). The height of
fluid layer is 10 cm. Apply the Finite Volume Method to discretize the governing equation and develop a
general expression for algebraic equations and solve for the velocity ‘u’. The minimum and recommended
number of control volumes / number of grid points is 3. The gravity can be assumed to 10 m/s 2, values of
density ρ=¿ 1000 kg/m3 and dynamic viscosity = 0.005 kg/m.s
(CLO-1, PLO-2, C-3) – 08 Marks
