IMPORTANT
1. The departmental rules relevant to electronically graded assessments apply.
2. Answer all questions in the Excel template provided on AMS and upload the completed Excel
submission to AMS. The question numbering in ( ) corresponds to the Excel template number-
ing.
3. Unless the answer is an integer, round all answers to three significant figures,e.g., if the
absolute value for an answer is 531.94 Ω, the answer to 3 significant figures would be 532 Ω or
0.532 kΩ.
4. Answers without units or with the incorrect units will be marked incorrect.
5. For multiple choice questions, write down the number corresponding to the correct answer on
your answer sheet.

Question 2 / Vraag 2 (4)

The following figure shows a simple rotating loop inside a uniformly distributed
magnetic field. The loop, consisting of conductors ab and cd, can rotate freely ei-
ther clockwise or counter clockwise. The loop has two commutating segments on
its terminals which are in turn in contact with two stationary brushes (ie a commu-
tator). All values to be calculated are instantaneous values for the position shown.
A DC voltage of Vxy = 20 V is applied to terminals xy. Given:
r = 3 cm, l = 10 cm, B = 20 T, Rloop = 2 Ω.
Calculate or determine the following parameters:

(2) The magnitude of the force on each of the conductors ab and cd. (2)
(3) Total torque developed. (1)
(4) Direction of rotation. Write ‘1’ for CW (Clock Wise) or ‘2’ for CCW (Counter
CW) in the numeric column of the spreadsheet. (1)

Solution:

V 20
(2) From f = ilB, and i = R
= 2
= 10 A. Therefore f = 10 × 0.1 × 20 = 20 N

(3) T = 2 × f × r = 2 × 20 × 0.03 = 1.2 Nm.

(4) CCW.

Question 3 / Vraag 3 (3)

A uniform flux density of 2 T is perpendicular to the plane of a five-turn coil of
radius 10 cm.
Determine:

(5) The flux linking the coil. (1)

(6) Suppose the field is decreased to zero at a uniform rate in 1 ms. What is the
magnitude of the voltage induced in the coil? (2)

Solution:

(5) φ = BA = 2(πr 2 ) = 62.8 mWb

dλ Nφ
(6) V = dt
= 1×10−3
= 314 V

Question 4 / Vraag 4 (2)

A 3-phase, 12 kV, 300 kW, delta connected load has a power factor of 0.85 lagging.
Use Van as the reference voltage.
Calculate:

(7) The line current Ia . (2)

Solution:

P
(7) Ia = √
(3VLL / 3)×pf
−acos(pf ) = 17.0 −31.79◦ A.

Question 5 / Vraag 5 (11)

A load draws 60 kVA at a lagging power factor of 0.7 from a source v (t) =
15 cos(200t) kV. Determine:

(8) the load current IL , (2)

(9) the apparent power drawn by the load, (1)
(10) impedance of the load, (2)
(11) the active power drawn by the load, (1)
(12) the reactive power drawn by the load, (1)
(13) complex power supplied by the source, (2)
(14) and the size of capacitor to be connected in parallel to the load to raise its
power factor to 1. (2)

Solution:

(8)

|S|
IL = −acos(pf ) = 4.0 −45.6◦ A
|V |

(9) 60 kVA

(10)
V 15000 0◦
ZL = = = 3.75 45.6◦ kΩ
IL 4 −45.6◦

(11) PL = S × pf = 42.0 kW

(12) QL = S × sin(acos(pf )) = 42.9 kvar

(13) S = PL + jQL = 42.0 + j42.9 kVA

QL
(14) C = w |V |2
= 9.52 × 10−7 F = 0.95 µF

Question 6 / Vraag 6 (8)

In the balanced three-phase network below is a 500 VLL generator feeding a load
via a short underground cable.

0.2 + j0.8 ? Ia

+ + +

Van

_ _ + VBC -

Generator Cable Load

Use Van as the reference voltage. Determine / calculate:

(15) Van (1)

(16) Ia (1)
(17) ICA (2)
(18) VBC (2)
(19) The complex power delivered by the generator. (2)

Solution:

V
(15) Van = √LL
3
= 289 V
Van
(16) Ia = Zline +Zd /3
= 9.86 −21.7◦ A

(17) VAN = Ia Zd /3 = 284 −1.33◦ V, VAB = 3 × VAN × 1 30◦ = 492 28.7◦
V, this gives IAB = VZAB
d
= 5.70 8.34◦ A. Therefore, ICA = IAB × 1 120◦ =

5.70 128.34 A

(18) VBC = VAB × 1 −120◦ = 492 −91.3◦ V

(19) S = 3Van Ia ∗ = 7.94 + j3.15 = 8.54 21.7◦ kVA

Question 7 / Vraag 7 (3)

It is found that a linear circuit delivers maximum power to a load ZL = 15 + j20 Ω.
Determine:

(20) the Thevenin impedance of the linear circuit, (1)

(21) the maximum average power received by the load if the linear circuit has an
open circuit voltage of 12 V. (2)

Solution:

Question 8 / Vraag 8 (12)

For the given magnetic core below, you must ultimately calculate:

a) The current required to store 30 mJ in the airgap if N = 1500 turns. Hint: Start
by finding the flux density in the air gap.
b) The inductance.

Below is a list of parameters (in no particular order) you might need in your cal-
culations. Calculate only the parameters needed to obtain the final answer(s) (in
Bold) and fill in those parameter answers in the spreadsheet given.

From Wg = 30mJ = V ,
2µ0 g
one can get Bg = 2Wg µ0 /Vg = 466.74 ≈ 467 mT

From φ1 = NI /Rtot , one has I = φ1 Rtot /N, and φ1 = R2R+R

φ1 .
Together with Bg = φ2 /Ag , one has φ2 = Bg Ag ≈ 202 µWb resulting in φ1 =
4.76 mWb

To get Rtot , we need R2 . For this purpose, R2c = µ r µ0 A c
= 26260.57At ÷ Wb ≈
lg
26.3kAt ÷ Wb and R2g = µ0 A g
= 1471476.9 ≈ 1.47MAt ÷ Wb
Therefore, R2 = R2c +R2g ≈ 1.50MAt ÷Wb and Rtot = R1 +R2 ||R3 ≈ 130kAt ÷Wb

Consequently, I = φ1 Rtot /N = 412 mA

these.
