(Total: 33 marks)
INSTRUCTION: Answer ALL questions.

Question 1

A short-tube vertical (natural circulation) single effect evaporator is used to concentrate a

feed solution of NaOH solution from 9 wt% to 50 wt%. Table 1 shows the typical heat
transfer coefficients, U for various evaporators. The feed enters at 18 °C. Saturated steam at
475.8 kPa is used for heating and the pressure in the vapor space of the evaporator is at 16
kPa. A total of 2000 kg/h of water is to be evaporated. State your assumption and calculate
the required surface area in m2.

Table 1: Typical heat transfer coefficients for various evaporators

Types of Evaporator Overall, U (W/m2.K)
Short-tube vertical (natural circulation) 1100 - 2800
Long-tube vertical (natural circulation) 1100 - 2800
Horizontal-tube vertical (natural circulation) 1500 - 4000

Question 2

A batch of wet solid is to be dried on a tray dryer. Determine the time required to dry a batch
of this material from a free moisture content X1 = 0.40 kg H2O/kg dry solid to X2 = 0.10 kg
H2O/kg dry solid. The drying curve for the solid is shown in Figure 1. (Note that weight of
dry solid/exposed surface area, Ls/A = 21.5 kg/m2)
