DESIGN CALCULATIONS FOR BULK HEAD GATE FOR SAINJ HEP

DOCUMENT NO. : GMW- J.1097-DBHG-DOC-01

SUBJECT : DESIGN CALCULATIONS FOR HINGED TYPE GATE FOR DESANDER GALLARY
1200 MM (W) x 2100 MM (H)
PROJECT : SAINJ HYDRO ELECTRIC PROJECT (100 MW), Kullu.
Description of the Gate:
The Bulk head doors will be provided at the end of Desander at Elevation 1725.67 masl for maintenance and
inspection purpose in the Desander.
During the operation the door shall be safely tightly closed to withstand the static water pressure acting on the
desander side while fully de-waterd from approach gallary side.
Hinged type bulk head gate for opening of 1.2m wide X 2.1m high of upstream skinplate and downstream
horizontal girders,end vertical girders sealings etc as specified. The gate shall be hinged to the gate frame
embedded parts. The gate shall be provided with machined bearing blocks to transfer the water load to the civil
structure.Suitable locking arrangement also provided for the hinged type gate.
The gate along with connected equipment shall be designed for the head corosponding to FRL against the normal
allowable stresses.
The gate is operated manually under un-watered condition.

11.2 Actual deflection = W L2 (8L13 - 4 L1 L22 + L23)

384 E I

where, GIRDER C
Height of the gatel (H1) = 230
C to C of Seal (L2) = 140
Moment of Inertia (INA) = 23449
Load on girder (W) = 151.35
Modulus of Elasticity = 2050000

Actual deflection = 0.09 cm

which is less than Permissible deflection i.e. 0.115 cm

12.0 DESIGN OF EMBEDDED PARTS

The EMBEDDED PARTS be checked for compression caused in concrete.

When load directly applied to EPs, it shall be considered as dispersed uniformly

at angle of 450 degree as shown

Tan 45 0 = t + tf or X = (t + tf) x Tan450

X

X = (t + tf) Tan 450

= ( 32 + 10 ) Tan 450
= 42.00 mm

2X = 84.00 mm
Total Area = 2 x (2X + tw) = 212 mm

Considering all hydrostatic load is transferred to Eps through two sides of gate
Load per unit length = 82.20 x 1000
230 x 2
= 179 kg per cm
Compression stress = load
Area

= 179 = 8.43 kg/cm2

21.20

The allowable compression stress in

2
concrete is = 65 kg/cm SAFE

13.0 DESIGN OF HINGES :

Two Hindges shall be provided at equaly spaced from the center for withstanding the whole gate weight and
smooth operation of the gate.

Page 13 of 14
Here, the Forces occures at the hinged as follows :

Total Weight of the Door (Fdoor) = 2500 Kg

Distance from CG to Hinge Axis (d1) = 750 mm

Distance between the Hinged (Dhinge) = 1250 mm

Hnce, Force on Each Hinge = Fdoor X d1

Dhinged

W = 1500 Kg = 15 kN

Design of Hinge PIN :

C/C support Plates (L) = 150 mm

Moment in Pin = WL/4 = 562500 N.mm

Proposed Dia of the Hinge Pin = 100 mm

C/S Area of the Pin (A) = 7850 mm2

Section Modulus (Z) = 98174.77 mm3

Hence, Bending Stress = 5.730 Mpa

Shear Stress in Pin = 1.91 Mpa

Bush Thickess required = 0.08*d + 3 = 11 mm

Provided = 12 mm

Hence, Provided Hinged connection is safe for the smooth operation of the gate.
