1.0 GENERAL

1.1 Scope
This document covers the analysis and design of 1000 KL Sump.

1.4 Soil Data


The safe bearing capacity of foundation is taken as 150 kN/m2.

2 Structural description:
1000 kL Sump is a Reinforced concrete Circular underground water tank, resting on ground. The
internal diameter of the tank is 16 m . Total Height of tank is 5.6 m which consists of liquid depth
of 5.1 m including free board of 0.3 m . For the maintenance purpose tank is provided with an
access through ladder.

2.1 Analysis and Design


IS3370- Part 4 tables are used for analysis of tank and in-house devloped spreadsheet is
used for design.

Design Data

Internal Dia of Tank = 16.00 m


Wall Thickness of tank = 0.225 m

Height of wall = 5.60 m


Free Board = 0.30 m
Dead storage = 0.20 m
Height of water = 5.10 m
Height of soil = 3.00 m
Capacity of Sump 0.785 x 16^2x 5.1 = 1025.42 m3
Net Capacity of Sump = 1025.42 m3 > 1000KL

Grade of concrete = 25 N/mm2


Grade of steel = 500 N/mm2
Density of water = 10 kN/m3
Density of Soil = 18 kN/m3
Density of concrete = 25 kN/m3
Angle of Repose = 30 degree

Bearing capacity considered for Design = 15 T/m

Pressure at base due to water = 56.00 kN/m2


Equivalent water pressure at base = 56.00 kN/m2
Surcharge due to Soil = 22 kN/m2

The wall shall be assumed hinged at base to find max hoop tension in wall.
At the base 50% of BM for fixed condition shall be taken into consideration.

Shear at d distance from Bottom of wall
V = 0.1683x56 x (5.6 - 0.175) = 50.19 kN

CASE 2 : Tank Empty , Soil outside

Base slab
Since the slab is supported on soil throughout, therefore
nominal reinforcement is provided
Thickness of base slab = 200 mm
Minimum reinforcement ( E/F) = 0.24 % = 240 mm2

Provide 12 T @200 c/c Both ways & Each face.


DESIGN OF SUMP ROOF SLAB
Design Data
Dimensions of the slab (c/c distance b/w supports), fck = 30 N/mm 2
Length of short span, Lx = 4.20 m fy = 500 N/mm 2
Length of long span, Ly = 4.20 m
Width of the supporting beam, = 200 mm
Clear cover to main reinforcement = 45 mm
Assume dia. of reinforcement steel = 8 mm

Calculations
Assume the thickness of slab as 150 mm ; Effective depth, d = 101 mm
Effective span, lx = 4.2 m (or) 4.101 m whichever is less; d = 4.101 m
ly = 4.2 m (or) 4.101 m whichever is less; d = 4.101 m
(ly / lx ) = 1.00 < 2 ; Here, (ly / lx ) is less than 2, Hence design the slab as two way slab

Load Calculations
Dead Load of slab = 0.15 x 25 = 3.75 KN/m2 Dust Load on slab = 0 KN/m2
