5. VERB “TO BE” Grupo: APSTi

USE OF VERB TO BE. Usamos el verbo to be (am, is, are) para dar información acerca de la identidad
o cualidad de una persona o cosa.

EXAMPLE: What do you do? (¿ Qué haces ?)

I´m a system engineer. (Soy ingeniero de sistemas)

I. - FORMAS: Afirmativa, negativa y pregunta.

1.1 AFIRMATIVA.- Colocamos primero el sujeto (pronombre personal o nombre propio), luego el verbo “to be” (am,
is, or are) y finalmente el complemento.

Sujeto + Be + Complemento Spanish

I am a student. Yo soy un estudiante.
You are early/late Usted está temprano/tarde. Contracciones:
He/ She is a technician. Él / Ella es un técnico.
I am
The machine (It) is on. La máquina esta encendida.
→ I´m
The switches (They) are off. Los interruptores están apagados.
you are, we are, they
We/They are electricians. Nosotros/Ellos somos /son
are → you´re, we
electricistas.
´re, they´re
he is, she is, it is → he´s, she´s, it´s.

Algunas veces es usado con Adverbios de frecuencia (AF) Frequency Adverbs.

EHAMPLE: He is always late. El siempre llega tarde.

1.2 NEGATIVA .- Simplemente agregamos not al verbo “to be”.

Sujeto + Be + not + Complemento Spanish

I am not a technician. Yo no soy un técnico.
You are not late. Usted no esta tarde.
He/She is not a student. El / Ella no es un estudiante.
That is not a computer. Este /Ese / Aquel no es una computadora.

Contracciones:
I am not → I´m not
You are not → you aren´t

He is not /she is not → he isn´t/she isn´t or he´s not/she´s not

It is not → it isn´t or it´s not
We are not/they are not → we aren´t/they aren´t or we´re not/they´re not.

1.3 PREGUNTA.- Tenemos dos tipos de preguntas:

1.3.1 PREGUNTAS Yes/No.- Se trata de preguntas donde la respuesta debe ser con Yes or No solamente.

Para hacer una pregunta, anteponemos el “verbo to be” al sujeto.

Respuestas cortas

Am I early ? ¿ Estoy temprano ? Yes, I am.
we late? ¿ Estamos tarde ? No, I am not.
Are the switches on? ¿ Están los interruptores prendidos ? Yes, they are.
you the manager? ¿ Usted es el administrador ? Yes, I am.
Is he/she a technician? ¿ Es el / ella un técnico ? No, he/she is not.
It an AC adapter? ¿ Es ese un adaptador AC* ? Yes, it is.
(*) AC: corriente alterna.

EXAMPLE:
Are you Peruvian? (¿Eres Peruano?)
Yes, I am. / No, I´m not.
Is he a technician? (¿El es técnico?)
Yes, he is. / No, he isn´t.

1.3.2 PREGUNTAS CON Wh- Se trata de preguntas de información específica; es decir, se comienza con palabras
interrogativas (Questions Word: QW) y luego se sigue el modelo de pregunta normal.

Who is the manager? ¿ Quién es el administrador ? He is Mr. Smith.
are those men? ¿ Quiénes son esos hombres ? Those are engineers.
What is that sound? ¿ Qué es aquel sonido ? It is a welding sound.

En estas tablas, QW (Question Words) significan palabras interrogativas: Where (Dónde), When (Cuándo), How
many (Cuántos), Why (Por qué), etc.

is that called? ¿Qué se llama eso? It is a laptop.

What are those called in English? ¿Cómo se llaman esos en Inglés? They are hardware.

Contracciones:
What is → What´s
Se puede decir What´s this ? but not What´s it ?
Usted tiene que decir: What is it ?
