Evidence guide
Overview of This unit of competency could be assessed in the workplace or
assessment a close simulation of the workplace environment, provided that
simulated or project-based assessment techniques fully
replicate automotive mechanical repair workplace conditions,
materials, activities, responsibilities and procedures.
Critical aspects for It is essential that competence in this unit signifies ability to
assessment and transfer competence to changing circumstances and to respond
evidence required to to unusual circumstances in the critical aspects of:
demonstrate  observing safety procedures and requirements
competency in this unit  communicating effectively with others involved in or
affected by the work
 selecting methods and techniques appropriate to the
circumstances
 completing preparatory activity in a systematic manner
 conducting service of a range of steering systems in
accordance with the workplace and
manufacturer/component supplier requirements
 accurately interpreting inspection results
 servicing of steering systems completed within workplace
timeframes
 vehicle is presented to customer in compliance with
workplace requirements
Context of and specific Application of competence is to be assessed in the workplace
resources for or simulated worksite
assessment Assessment is to occur using standard and authorised work
practices, safety requirements and environmental constraints
Assessment is to comply with regulatory requirements,
including relevant Standards
Resource implications for assessment include:
 workplace location or simulated workplace
 material relevant to the inspection and servicing of steering
systems and associated components
 equipment, hand and power tooling appropriate to the
inspection and servicing of steering systems and associated
components
 inspect and service the steering systems of two different
vehicles or machinery, including one of the following:
◦ manual steering
◦ electric power assisted steering
◦ hydraulic power assisted steering
◦ full hydraulic steering.
 activities covering mandatory task requirements

Evidence guide
 specifications and work instructions
Method of assessment Assessment methods must:
 satisfy the endorsed Assessment Guidelines of the Solomon
Islands Automotive Industry National Training Package
 include direct observation of tasks in real or simulated work
conditions, with questioning to confirm the ability to
consistently identify and correctly interpret the essential
underpinning knowledge required for practical application
 reinforce the integration of employability skills with
workplace tasks and job roles
 confirm that competency is verified and able to be
transferred to other circumstances and environments.
Validity and sufficiency of evidence requires that:
 competency will need to be demonstrated over a period of
time reflecting the scope of the role and the practical
requirements of the workplace
 where the assessment is part of a structured learning
experience the evidence collected must relate to a number
of performances assessed at different Times Separated by
further learning and practice, with a decision on
competency only taken at the point when the assessor has
complete confidence in the person's demonstrated ability
and applied knowledge
 all assessment that is part of a structured learning
experience must include a combination of direct, indirect
and supplementary evidence.
Assessment processes and techniques should as far as is
practical take into account the language, literacy and numeracy
capacity of the candidate in relation to the competency being
assessed.

Range statement
The range statement relates to the unit of competency as a whole. It allows for different
work environments and situations that may affect performance. Bold italicised wording, if
