Answer Part II Spillway

This document summarizes the calculations to determine the design of a spillway for a hydraulic structure. It includes: 1) Calculating the clear water way and effective length of the spillway given data on dimensions. 2) Using the design discharge and a formula to calculate the design head of 10.024m. 3) Approximating the upstream and downstream profiles of the spillway through formulas using the design head, with example calculations provided. 4) Identifying parameters like radii of curvature and extreme points that can be used to draw the profiles. 5) Differentiating the downstream profile equation and calculating the tangent point of the profile.

Hydraulic structure-I Final Exam, Part-II spillway

Solution

Given the above data, it is then possible to calculate the clear water way;

-Clear water way = 10*12.5 = 125m

-Effective length of the spillway = Le = L - 2[N Kp+ Ka]Hd

Le = 125-2[9*0.01 +0.10]Hd

However, the design head is computed from the design discharge as follows:

Q = CLeHd1.5 = 8500 = 2.2LeHd1.5

By substituting the value of Le in the discharge equation,

Le = 125-0.38Hd 50
marks
8500 = 2.2LeHd1.5 = 3863 = (125-0.38Hd)Hd1.5

3863 = 125Hd3/2-0.38Hd5/2

Finally by trial and error, the value of the design head becomes,

Hd = 10.024m

In order to approximate the shape of the spillway, the upstream and downstream
profiles are represented as follows:

-For the upstream profile using the equation provided;

0.724( x + 0.270 Hd )1.85

y= + 0.126 H d − 0.4315 H d ( x + 0.270 H d )0.625
0.375
0.85
Hd

The most important terms to be reduced are, taking Hd as 10.024m

0.27 Hd = 2.706 Hd 0.85 = 7.09 Hd0.375 = 2.373

1|Page
0.126 Hd = 1.264 0.4315 Hd0.375 = 1.024

Using the arithmetic value of the above, it is possible to approximate the equation
for the upstream face;
y = [{0.724 (x+2.706 )1.85}/ 7.09] + 1.264 - 1.024 (x + 2.706)0.625
Therefore, it is possible to locate the coordinates to the left of the origin with the
above equation to get the value of the ordinate for a selected abscissa points.

Alternatively, the value of R1 and R2 along with a and b can be used to draw
25
curvatures and locate corresponding extreme points respectively;
marks
R1 = 0.5 Hd = 0.5x 10.024= 5.012

and R2= 0.2 Hd = 0.2x10.024= 2.00048

b= 0.282 Hd = 2.827 a = 0.175 Hd = 1.754

-For the downstream profile

Since the upstream face is vertical, the values of k is 0.85 and 1.85 for n

From the equation of the downstream profile;

Xn = K (Hd)n-1 Y

X1.85 = 0.85(10.024)1.85-1Y = X1.85 = 0.85(10.024)0.85Y

X1.85 = 0.85(7.08)Y
25
1.85
X = 6.02Y marks

Y = 0.166X1.85----------------------the equation for the downstream profile equation

dy 1
Since the slope is = = 1.33
dx 0.75

Differentiating y with respect to x, dy/dx = 0.3071X0.85

0.3071X 0.85 = 1.33, the value of X = 5.58m

Therefore, the tangent point of the profile is at a distance of 5.58m from the
origin

N.B.

Any student who has worked out on the coordinate fixing for both profiles as well
as a sketch, considerations can be possible.
