The Siemens MIIU-82SS

A Solid state, high reliability device incorporating photo-mos relays

Accurate and Reliable Metering Systems are key to the reliable operation of the
Central Settlement system. Whilst it is a requirement that the metering system
registrant has access to the data from these meters (generally in pulse format), it is
vital that the third party equipment connected to these meters cannot inadvertently
affect or damage the tariff meters. Where pulse signals leave the confines of the
sealed metering system, this protection is provided by the inclusion of a Metering
Impulse Interposing Unit (MIIU).

Traditional MIIUs achieved this isolation / protection
through the use of Mercury Wetted relays. These were
used as they exhibit significantly longer contact life
characteristics when compared to normal relays. However,
the relays still have a limited contact life and restrictions
on the use of mercury within products has made this type
of relay all but obsolete.
The Siemens MIIU-82SS is a modern solid state, high
reliability device incorporating photo-mos relays. These
offer significant advantages over their electo-mechanical
counterparts.
