PROJECTIONS
OF THE
ELBOW
ELBOW SERIES

• Elbow series consists of

• AP
• Oblique
• Medial and lateral
• Lateral

• Raise arm so that the elbow and

shoulder are on the same plane
AP
(ANTERIOR POSTERIOR)

• Clinical Indications

• IR: 10”x12”
• Grid: none needed
• kVp: equipment dependent
• mAs: equipment dependent
ADDITIONAL VIEWS

• Acute flexion
• Two images taken
• View distal humerus and proximal radius and ulna

ADDITIONAL VIEWS

• Coyle-Trauma axial
• View the radial head and coronoid process
• Two positions
• 1. (radial head) Elbow flexed 90 degrees; hand
pronated
• IR and CR centered to mid elbow joint
• Tube angled 45 degrees toward shoulder
• 2. (coronoid process) elbow flexed 80 degrees
hand pronated
• IR and x-ray tube centered to mid elbow
joint
• CR angled 45 degrees away from shoulder
