a)

Manipulated : Number of strokes to inflate the balloon

Responding : Distance travelled by the two-stage balloon rocket
Constant : Shape of balloon

Hypothesis :
a) Mass and distance travelled
The lesser the number of coins attached to the two-stage balloon rocket, the further the
distance travelled by the two-stage balloon rocket.

b) Volume of air and distance travelled

The higher the number of strokes to inflate the two-stage balloon rocket, the further the
distance travelled by the two-stage balloon rocket.

Materials and apparatus :

Long modelling balloon, balloon pump, straw, cardboard paper towel ring, fishing line, binder
clips, cellophane tape, scissors, measuring tape

Procedure :

Diagram 1.1 : The set up of apparatus to determine the variables

a) Mass and distance travelled

1. One end of a fishing line is tied to a chair or pole.
2. The first balloon is inflated until the air reaches the line marked and the balloon’s nozzle shut
is pinched by using a binder clip to prevent the balloon from deflating.
3. The first balloon’s nozzle is pulled through the cardboard ring and pressed up against the
side.
4. The second balloon is threaded partially through the cardboard ring, so its nozzle is facing the
same direction as the first balloon.
5. The second balloon is inflated carefully the same as the length of the first balloon, such that it
presses up against the inside of the cardboard ring, and squeezes the nozzle of the first balloon
shut.
6. The nozzle of the second balloon is pinched shut, either by using a binder clip.
7. The drinking straws are threaded through the fishing line and pulled tightly at the end of the
line.
8. The balloons are taped to the drinking straws and pointing along the fishing line in a straight
line.
9. The balloons are pulled to one end of the line and both nozzles are released.
10. The deflation of a two-stage balloon rocket is observed.
11. The distance travelled by a two-stage balloon rocket is recorded by using a measuring tape.
12. Step 1 to step 11 is repeated by adding the number of coins (1, 2 and 3) attached to the
balloon.
