What are the role of Embryologist?

1. Maintenance of the Embryology lab

2. Identified and collect the egg after egg retrieval.
3. Prepare the retrieved eggs for fertilization or egg freezing.
4. Fertilization of eggs either by conventional method or ICSI.
5. Look on stages of fertilization and assess the development of the resulting embryos.
6. Incubation of the fertilized eggs and periodically monitor the embryo.
7. Embryo biopsy for genetic tests.
8. Select the best embryo to transfer.
9. Cryopreservation of extra embryo for patient to use later.
Prepare embryos for research purposes
Perform IVF, artificial insemination, cryopreservation of embryos and embryonic transfer
Coordinate and schedule farm trips for retrieval of eggs and sperm
Set up filters, medias and supplies used during the collection of embryos
Rinse, search, wash and accurately grade embryos according to protocols

Freeze embryos for storage in liquid nitrogen

Monitor and fill nitrogen storage tanks when needed

Perform oocyte searching andfor IVF

Monitor and record temperatures and other appropriate information

Maintain, clean and label collection vessels
Maintain embryo inventories

Complete documentation of patient information

Reorder supplies when needed
Perform quality control of embryology media

What are the stages of IVF?

1. Ovarian Stimulation
2. Egg retrieval
3. Sperm retrieval
4. Fertilization
5. Embryo transfer
6. Pregnancy Test
What is VOC? State agents of VOC.
VOC= Volatile Organic Compound
VOC Agents
1. Construction Materials
are any organic (carbon-containing) solid or liquid compound that evaporates at room temperature. VOCs
are generated from a variety of materials, the list is long and includes construction materials, such as
wood furniture, polyvinyl chloride flooring materials, adhesives, and paints, all of which release
formaldehyde or aldehydes
2. Cleaning Products (ammonia based products)
3. Disinfectant with ethanol
4. Cosmetics- Perfumes (which is typically based alcohol)
- nitrous oxide, sulfur dioxide and heavy metals
What are the two primary methods of fertilization in IVF?
1. Conventional insemination
2. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection
What test should be done before embryo transfer?
PGT= Preimplantation genetic testing
[Pre- Implantation Genetic Screening (PGS) / Comprehensive Chromosome Screening (CCS) ]- 1st
priority- to determine chromosome error, diagnosis and miscarriage, Should do in over 35 years of
age in women, 2nd priority- family building, family balancing, embryo banking, and gender selection.
1. PGD (Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis)- who have or are carriers of a known genetic
disorders- to prevent disability and disease in their children

List the gases used in IVF.

1. Nitrogen
2. Carbon dioxide
3. Oxygen
What are the medical grade (%) fir N2 gases?
99.9 % purity
Write down the types of incubator in Sakura Fertility Centre.
1. Bench Top (Cook Incubator)
2. Water Jacket CO2 Incubator (Astec)
3. Naka IVF K series ( Draw type) incubator
What are the warnings or sensitive factors in a IVF lab?
Noise free, Dust free, Vibration free, VOC free.
Describe two tests of female genital tract anatomy.
TVS= Transvaginal Ultrasound
-inserts an ultrasound wand into the vagina to look for problems with the reproductive system,/ is non-
invasive, reproducible, and does not interfere with physiological process TVS has excellent resolution and
is easily available, and is a must to diagnose all sorts of pathologies

HSG= Hysterosalphingogram
SIS= Saline Infusion Sonogram (Sonohysterography)
