CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT - MID

NOVEMBER 2022 (ONLINE)
ANSWER SHEET

1)Words can be regarded as the smallest linguistic units, which consist of one or more sounds
in each language. In a sentence, words can be moved around independently. Words can be
separated by space when writing. The word can be analyzed into phonemes (units of sound)
and morphemes (meaningful units). Key ideas for comprehending word structure are roots,
prefixes, and suffixes.

Words that can typically stand-alone are known as root words. Root words can be changed by
adding prefixes and suffixes such as un, er, ed, etc. The elements added to the end of a root
word are known as suffixes.

There are two main word classes: lexical (open word class) and functional (closed word class).
A lexical or "open" word class consists of a large number of words, and new words can be
created and added to this group. Lexical words are also identified as "content" words. The
meaning of the lexical word is easy to understand. Nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs
belong to the open word class, and functional words include articles, prepositions, pronouns,
conjunctions, etc. Functional words are hard to define.

2) Antonyms are a pair of words that have the opposite meaning. Antonyms can be divided into
three categories: gradable (graded antonyms), non-gradable (complimentary), and irreversible
( coverseness). Graded antonyms address the meaning of a word. A pair of words having
opposing meanings that both fall on a continuous spectrum is said to be gradable antonyms.
Adjective pairs that may be qualified by adverbs like very, very, excessively, etc., are also
known as gradable antonyms.

Eg, the weather was surprisingly hot.

The weather was very cold.

It was incredibly hot.

For example, the weather was hot or the weather was cold. These belong to the temperature
and final limit of the opposition. The final limits are cold in the negative direction and hot in
the positive direction. Examples of gradable antonyms include friendly /unfriendly, wet/dry,
interesting /boring, bright /dull, modern/old-fashioned, bland/delicious, etc. The antonymy-
forming characteristic shows at various levels. In the case of hot and cold, the poles oriented to
negative and positive concepts are where temperature differentiation occurs.
